The Jockey Club Registry rules define a white horse as one in which the entire coat, including the mane, tail and legs, is predominantly white. Although registered white Thoroughbreds are not as rare as they once were, race fans do not often get the chance to see one. Sure, fans see plenty of horses that may be light enough in color to appear white, but one look in the program will confirm the horse as “gray/roan.”
Patchen Princess, a two-year-old registered white filly by Pioneering, will make her career debut in Keeneland’s sixth race on Friday’s card. The race is a $50,000 maiden race for two-year-old fillies at six furlongs over the Polytrack. Patchen Princess is trained by Bill Connelly for owner Warren Rosenthal’s Lexington-based Patchen Wilkes Farm. She will be ridden by jockey John McKee.
Patchen Princess is the fifth registered white foal out of the mare Patchen Beauty, who is also registered white. Two full siblings, The White Fox and Patchen Prince, also made one start at Keeneland during their careers. A half-brother, White Prince by Devil His Due, resides at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington and is a resident of the park’s Breeds Barn. He is in training to perform in the park’s twice-daily summer show, Parade of Breeds.
Rosenthal’s racing stable includes another white two-year-old named Precious Beauty. She is out of Patchen Princess’ half-sister, Spot of Beauty. Her sire is Whywhywhy, a three-time graded stakes winner at the age of two. Precious Beauty is training for her first race, so maybe we’ll be lucky enough to see her make her first start at Keeneland or Churchill Downs.
Patchen Princess will break from post 1 and is listed at 20-1 on the morning line. The race is the sixth on Keeneland's Friday card with a scheduled post time of 3:50 p.m. The race can be seen live on TVG or live streaming on Keeneland's website.
