World Wide Read: Carmichael’s Bookstore celebrates World Book Night this Monday

Fresh from the green goodness of Earth Day (which should really be every day if you ask this little eco-nut) this upcoming Sunday, April 22nd, here’s your chance to join worldwide forces in rapid succession for a cause just as worthy and healthy.  This upcoming Monday, April 23rd, is World Book Night, a literary campaign making its debut in the United States after successes in Great Britain and Ireland.  Plan to be out and about around the town?  Look out!  Reading might be on your horizon sooner than you think as Carmichaels’ World Book Night volunteers drop their book bombs into fresh hands and spread the love of literature freestyle.

While it’s no secret that I like to read, and I am perhaps about as subtle with my erudition soap-boxing as a can-can dancer (actually, that tactic might raise more awareness…), for one night I will not be alone in my book-nut tomfoolery.  This upcoming Monday, April 23rd, kicks off America’s inaugural participation in World Book Night, as tens of thousands of bookworms on both sides of the pond volunteer their time to share reading with the masses.

Choosing from a list of 30 carefully selected titles – including classics, bestsellers and young adult reads – World Book Night volunteers operating in conjunction with Carmichael’s Bookstore will hit the streets armed with 20 copies each of their chosen favorite.  Depositing the titles directly into the hands of strangers, these free books have been specially-produced for this event, with the authors foregoing royalties; additionally, many book publishers, The American Booksellers Association, Barnes and Noble, The American Library Association, The Association of American Publishers, Ingram Book Company, UPS and dozens of printers and binders have paid for printing and shipping to make this worldwide reading awareness celebration possible.

April 23rd - the day recognized by UNESCO as marking the anniversary of both Cervantes' death and Shakespeare's birth and death - is now an opporunity for readers to share the joys of literature and encourage people to remember their paperbound friends.  Long live the book!

About Erin Day
I currently spend most of my days sequestered in a dark and secret room projecting IMAX films for an adoring public. In my spare time I read books (a lot) and contemplate ever more devious ways to become a professional Blacksmith. I love words, paper, fashion, trees, Charlie Chaplin, useless knick-knacks and my beloved turquoise 1994 Ford Ranger - Daniel. I totally believe in the Loch Ness Monster. Books are culture; my goal is to tell you a story.
