At the Alley Theater’s Princess Bride Experience on Saturday, I discovered Gyros Express. Just the aromas of slow-cooked lamb and warm pita, which wafted enticingly through the cherry red truck’s tiny windows, were more than enough to get my attention, and the gyro I ate was wonderful.
Chef Maria Bell offers an extensive selection of gyros. The menu offered the following: lamb, chicken, Italian sausage, MLT (mutton, lettuce, and tomato), Cajun lamb or chicken, fish, BBQ chicken or lamb, and vegetarian. However, a sign in the window stated that she also offers pork, fajita lamb, chicken teriyaki, meatball, shrimp, Greek salad, vegan, and more!
Now, I internally grumbled a little about the $7.00 per gyro price before I took my first bite, but once I had started eating, I knew that it was worth the money. Though I’m always a little worried about quality when I order it because it’s very often fatty or gristly, I chose lamb, and what a tender, lean, and lovely choice I made! It was fantastic and well-seasoned, nestled into soft pita with creamy, tangy yogurt, tomatoes, cucumbers, and a few onions with just enough bite left to add a great textural contrast. Yum. I want another one right now.
With two friendly faces inside, the truck also offers Greek coffee, baklava, bottled water, juice, and sodas. They even deliver right to your door Monday through Friday from 11 AM to 2 PM and 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM!
