Bummed out because of the emergency closure of the Sherman Minton Bridge? Does your commute to Louisville from southern Indiana take almost three hours? Well, help is on the way—starting Wednesday morning (09/14/11)—in the form of a passenger ferry to assist folks in crossing the Ohio River. The Spirit of Jefferson will shuttle people from downtown Jeffersonville to downtown Louisville beginning tomorrow morning.
The shuttle will cost $1 each way and will initially operate on weekdays for two weeks, said Linda Harris, CEO of the Spirit and its companion, The Belle of Louisville. If the service proves popular, the shuttle will be expanded.
The Spirit can hold 300 people. The shuttle will run from Riverfront Park in Jeffersonville to the 4th Street Wharf in Louisville. Indiana has 265 free parking spaces under the Kennedy Bridge where residents can park to board the shuttle.
Once people arrive onshore in Louisville, they can walk to major employers downtown or catch the free trolleys on Main, Market and Fourth streets. People may also walk one block north to Main Street to catch TARC buses to travel to other areas of the city. For a full TARC schedule, visit www.ridetarc.org or call the TARC customer service center at 502-585-1234.
Because the Spirit has evening dinner cruises, the afternoon shuttle will only be available 3 p.m. to 5:15 p.m.
