Zach's weekend picks for Louisville: Drink at M.A.M!Fest, drink with the Ale Club, drink with a singer/songwriter to the stars

In addition to punk/metal band CAN!!CAN's show tonight at Derby City Espresso and Punk Torah's event Friday night at Adath Jeshurun (have Derby City Espresso and a synagogue ever booked the same act before?) here are some other suggestions for the weekend. Louisville's International Festival of Film Wine & Cheese Reception Louisville Visual Art Association 3005 River Rd. Aug. 14, 6 p.m. Wine + cheese + international movies = event worth dusting off your monocle for (unfortunately I lost mine on the Upper East Side). "Conrad Bachmann, co-founder Louisville Film Arts Institute and Louisville’s International Festival of Film, and governor of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences will unveil the inaugural event poster design and ticket packages." The poster was created by a local artist. Tickets are free. RSVP at 502-753-3797. Louisville Ale Club Tony BoomBozz Taphouse 1448 Bardstown Rd. Aug. 15, 3 p.m. The Louisville Ale Club, which I profiled a few weeks ago is preparing for back-to-school season by "getting a little buzzed on a Saturday afternoon" (consider it training for the upcoming college football season). "There is a lot of buzz about Tony BoomBozz's new tap room, so we're going to go check this place out for ourselves," said Kevin Spalding, the ale club's president. "To sweeten the deal, we're getting 23oz drafts for the price of a pint [that's seven ounces free for those of you unfamiliar with beer math] as well as 10 percent off food." M.A.M!Fest O'Shea's Traditional Irish Pub 956 Baxter Ave. Aug. 15, 4 p.m. While it's probably too late for those of you with less testosterone than I to cultivate a Ron Jeremy-worthy mustache by Saturday, attend Mustaches Against Malignancies (M.A.M!Fest) anyway. The event benefits The Gilda's Club Louisville, which "provides a place where children and adults with cancer and their families and friends join with others to build social and emotional support as a supplement to medical care." M.A.M!Fest features barbecue, beers, music and mustache awards (competitors are lucky I'll be out of town). A $10 contribution is requested. Singer/Songwriter "To The Stars" Night Lovers Leap Vineyard & Winery 1180 Lanes Mill Rd., Lawrenceburg Aug. 15, 5:30 p.m A bit further afield singer/songwriter Kent Blazy, who's written songs for Garth Brooks and Kenny Chesney, headlines an evening of food, wine and song at Lovers Leap Vineyard & Winery. Blazy and Cory Batten take the stage at 7:30 p.m. with Sonny Bayes and Melissa Goodlett opening at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $10, with some of the proceeds benefiting the Makenna Foundation of the Kentucky Children's Hospital. All Julia... à la carte! Lilly's--A Kentucky Bistro 1147 Bardstown Road Aug. 15, 5:30 p.m. Lilly's is celebrating Julia Child, who's been getting a lot of posthumous attention with the recent release of "Julie & Julia," "with a special menu of her favorite recipies, selected by Chef Kathy Cary." The à la carte menu includes Julia's favorite omelet; chicken, duck and foie gras pâté; and bouillabaisse (which, if you're 22 years old and about to go out tomcatting with some friends, you should never eat immediately beforehand). The food will, of course, be accompanied by wine pairings. For more information: Interested in events you shouldn't attend? Read about Louisville's worst upcoming concerts. (Photo: Zach Everson)
