With the grace and beauty of shadow puppetry, and performing to the 1919 Firebird Suite composed by Igor Stravinsky, Madcap tells the story of the kind Prince Ivan who captures the Firebird. In Madcap Puppet Theatre’s production of the Firebird, two ancient and timeless arts are combined-puppetry and storytelling. Using shadow puppetry, a style developed in China over 2,000 years ago, Madcap portrays one of the oldest known stories in the annals of fable: the legend of the Firebird, beloved in Russian literature for centuries and in ancient Egypt as the legend of the Phoenix.

Frye, associate professor of theatre arts, brings a deep background in the plays of Shakespeare. Author of “William Poel’s Hamlets: the Director as Critic” and Shakespearean scholar, Frye combines action and dialogue from several historic versions to include scenes that are rarely seen on modern stages. “It’s always a treat to work on one of the great plays and to engage with one of the greatest artistic minds of all times,” Frye said. “I vision Hamlet as a man of action rather than the depressive aesthete made popular in 19th century productions.”
