Join us as the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft presents Blackacre Art Week 2009 at Blackacre State Nature Preserve, located just off Tucker Station Road in eastern Jefferson County. Taking place in one of the city’s most beautiful outdoor facilities, this intense and fun-filled hands-on art day camp is open for creative 10-13 year olds who are interested in art. They require no skill level or prior experience, just a sincere desire to learn. Participants will take part in four different workshops designed and taught by Kentucky’s finest artists.

School of Rock creates an environment for young people to discover the joys of music through the experience of playing, performing and studying rock music. Campers will learn theory, chords, song writing and rock out in daily Jam Sessions! All leads of musicians welcome. Instructors Jeremy Reddick, Justin Reid & Charlie Rivera have all been teaching music for several years.

In conjunction with the nation-wide celebration of Abraham Lincoln’s Bicentennial, this exhibition will take you on Louisville artist Ed Hamilton’s artistic journey to create the Louisville Waterfront Park Lincoln Memorial. The memorial features a young Abraham Lincoln reading a book. The exhibition will features early clay sculptures of the piece, plaster models, drawings, and the 12-foot final models of the Lincoln sculpture, as well as early sketches of the panels of bas-relief sculptures depicting scenes of slavery and Lincoln’s extraordinary life. Taking a broad view of Lincoln, this exhibition explores the complex relationship between Abraham Lincoln and his native state.

Pressma in 1970. During its eight-year existence, the Center attracted students from over 35 states and foreign countries to its full-time resident program and provided instruction and darkroom access for hundreds of students in the Louisville area. This exhibition will be a look back at the artistic career of C.J. Pressma.

What makes something a treasure? Is it its uniqueness, its maker or original owner or simply its visual appeal? Great Revivals: Kentucky Decorative Arts Treasures, presents significant pieces from the Kentucky Historical Society collections that have been preserved and are treasured. Exhibit Description: Casey Hyland's glass art exhibit, "Wishful Thinking", will feature artwork produced over the last three years. Using silvered bottles, clear stones, thin steel rods with glass and bubbles inside bubbles, the artwork describes moments of gazing into the mirror at a bar, stacking stones, blowing wishes with a dandelion and playing with soap bubbles. As well, Casey will also install a hanging chandelier in Glassworks' main lobby. Entitled "Offering", the silvered glass sculpture is loosely inspired by Shel Silverstein's"The Giving Tree".

An Exhibition of hand-colored black and white photographs documenting 40 year of travel to Kenya. By Fritz Klemperer. As a conscientious objector the Vietnam War, Fritz Klemperer began serving his two year alternative service in Kenya. He joined the merchant marine, drove an ambulance and taught school. Since then, Klemperer has returned to Kenya six times in over 40 years. Klemperer is a psychologist who lives with his wife and three children in Berea, Ohio.

Artist Statement: Bottles, stones, dandelions, and bubbles are the subjects of my work. Using reflective surfaces and solid clear glass in multiples, I am interested in the capture of light and arresting viewer. – Casey Hyland About the Artist: Since graduating from Washington University in St. Louis with a major in architecture, Casey has traveled through Seattle, Tennessee, North Carolina, and New York studying and working at craft schools. These schools have included Pilchuck, Appalachian Center for Crafts, Penland, UrbanGlass and the Studio at Corning.

Wild Music: Sounds & Songs of Life Temporary Exhibit, Open June – August 2009

Dressed in historic period costume, your lantern bearing guide will lead you through the dark mysteries and supernatural experiences of some of Louisville's most haunted landmarks including the Brennen House, the Old City Jail, and the Seelbach Hotel. This tour is appropriate for all ages and includes stories of the tragic spirit of the Lady In Blue, the Legend of the Stick Witch, and the mysterious apparition at the Palace Theater.

In this new exhibit, fiber artist Penny Sisto examines commonalities in five world religions: Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, and Judaism. On May 16, the Frazier International History Museum opens Fontaine Ferry, a 3,800 square foot exhibition that explores this integral part of Louisville's history, just in time for the 40th anniversary of the park's closing. The exhibition will explore the park's beginnings as a boat landing in 1814, through the Great Depression and the Great Flood of 1937 to the 64-acre attraction's demise amid the effects of urban flight and racial tensions of the civil rights movement. Weatherly’s private collection of swords, sabers and related artifacts from the United States, Canada and various South American countries, is a fascinating glimpse into the past. Through the exhibition, Weatherly—a scholar, collector and past president of the American Society of Arms Collectors-- shares his passion for this area of study and collecting that is often neglected.

The human form as a theme in glass art of all kinds is the subject of an exhibit at Flame Run contemporary art glass studio from February 6 to March 28. An opening night reception begins at 6 p.m. The show called “The Human Formed” was inspired by the work of Susie Slabaugh White, who owns the studio and hot shop with her husband, Brook White. Susie said she hatched the idea when she noticed human forms as a recurring theme in the work of glass artists she admired.
