In I Wonder as I Wander: The Life of John Jacob Niles, University of Kentucky Associate Professor of Musicology Ronald Pen presents a vibrant study of the Louisville composer. Regarded as one of this country's most influential musicians, Niles drew inspiration from traditional Appalachian and African American folk songs. Pen utilizes Niles’ journals, notebooks, and unpublished autobiography to explore how Niles became the “Dean of American Balladeers.” In this presentation Pen will also play some of Niles’ songs on the fiddle.

For a fourth consecutive year, National Urban League and Walgreens are partnering to provide six free health screenings to residents in urban communities nationwide. The tour will arriving in Louisville to offer these screenings beginning on September 23rd. The free screenings include blood pressure, bone density, glucose and cholesterol levels, body mass index and waist circumference, and are valued at more than $140.

A hands-on investigation/equipment exercise will give you the opportunity to use research tools and report on the investigation.
This writing workshop is designed for beginners who want to write for children and for experienced scribes who want to try a new genre. You’ll learn about copyright, rewrites, manuscripts, query letters, guidelines, tags, beginnings and endings, publishing and more. Please bring two sheets of writing paper, two #10 envelopes and two first-class postage stamps to class.
This class will focus on the potential that the local landscape offers for visual expression in paint. You'll receive instruction in linear and atmospheric perspective; long and short depth of field; light, color, time of day and season; and the horizon--water, sky and ground. You will work to produce a small number of paintings that successfully translate their landscapes.

The Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft will host “Equine Divine” from August 7 through October 16, 2010. Fitting for an organization in the heart of the horse industry, this exhibition will feature work by two artists, Deborah Butterfield and Tim Flach, who are inspired by our equine companions. There will also be a small selection of equine inspired prints and drawings from the Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine and The Purdue University Galleries. The opening reception will be held in conjunction with the First Friday Trolley Hop on Friday, August 6th from 5:00pm – 9:00pm.

The Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft will host “Red River: The Narrative Carvings of Edgar Tolson, Donny Tolson, Carl McKenzie and Earnest Patton,” July 24 through October 9, 2010. This is exhibition No. 9 in the Mary Norton Shands Kentucky Artist Series, an ongoing series of exhibitions which focus on the rich variety and quality of Kentucky art and artists, presented in the memory of our Museum founder. The opening reception will be held Friday, July 23rd from 5:00pm – 8:00pm.

21c Museum unveils three pieces by Simen Johan that have never before been on public view in a ten-year survey of the artist’s work. The two photographs and one sculpture to be displayed for the first time are new additions to Johan’s "Until the Kingdom Comes" series.
