Poet Frank X. Walker will speak on his new poetry collection, I Dedicate This Ride: The Making of Isaac Murphy. The subject of Mr. Walker’s new book, Isaac Burns Murphy, was an African-American jockey born in Frankfort, KY in 1861. He won the Kentucky Derby three times, the American Derby in Chicago four times, and the Latonia Derby five times. In all, Murphy rode 628 winners in his 1,412 mounts, the best winning average in history with over 34 percent.

Designed for amateurs and first-time brewers, this course explores the process of home brewing beer from start to finish. Topics include brewing with malt extract; a brief history of brewing; necessary equipment; cooking and cooling the wort; fermentation; bottling and carbonation; and alternative styles of brewing.
Learn formal and expressive techniques of abstract painting. Discover understandable techniques for using space, mass, color, and line. This class also explores a basic abstract "alphabet," the fractured image, spatial arrangement, the image forsaken, and textural devises.

The Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft will host “Equine Divine” from August 7 through October 16, 2010. Fitting for an organization in the heart of the horse industry, this exhibition will feature work by two artists, Deborah Butterfield and Tim Flach, who are inspired by our equine companions. There will also be a small selection of equine inspired prints and drawings from the Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine and The Purdue University Galleries. Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest welcomes returning Grandmaster M. O. Serikali, Ph.D. and assistant instructor Revakah Higgins-Myers for another 10 week course on Thursday evenings of Tai Chi Chuan beginning August 5. This practice is an ancient Chinese art that strengthens both body and spirit with physical movement and mental concentration, and is one of the many opportunities at Bernheim that expands Bernheim’s mission of connecting people with nature. “Tai Chi and nature have to be part of our reality and humanity based on what we see, feel, and do,” says Dr. Serikali.
