The Piankeshaw Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution cordially invite you to attend an old fashion Victorian Tea and tour the Scribner House from 1:00-5:00 pm on Sunday, December 6, 2009. The House is located at 106 E. Main Street, New Albany, Indiana. Tours of the Scribner House will start at 1:00 pm. Tea & refreshments will be served. The Underhill Trio will fill the house with beautiful salon music. The gift shop will be open for special Scribner House gifts including a new Scribner House pitcher and Scribner House Christmas ornament for your holiday shopping. While many school children tour Scribner House each year, it is open for tours to the general public only by special arrangement. There will be no charge, however, donations are appreciated. This event will give you an opportunity to tour the Scribner House & help preserve New Albany’s oldest house. In addition, this fund raising activity provides financial resources for prizes for history projects, essay contests as well as funds for various patriotic endeavors of the chapter. Members of the Piankeshaw Chapter, NSDAR hope that you will take advantage of this opportunity to tour the house during the Christmas season while it is decorated as it might have been in 1800’s. Scribner House is the oldest house in New Albany, Indiana having been built by Joel Scribner, one of the founders of New Albany, in 1814. Members of the Scribner family continued to live in the house until 1917. During that year the house was purchased by Piankeshaw Chapter NSDAR with the understanding that the owner, Miss Harriet Rowland Scribner, the granddaughter of Joel Scribner and a member of the Piankeshaw chapter, would be allowed to occupy the house for the rest of her life. She died a few months later on September 24, 1917, at the age of 82. The house is unique in that many of the furnishings are family pieces. The Piankeshaw Chapter is part of the national organization with more than 3,000 chapters and over 165,000 members around the world. The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was founded in 1890 to promote patriotism, preserve American history, and support better education for our nation's children. Any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution is eligible for membership. DAR is one of the world's largest and most active service organizations.
