The 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 is marked by reflections on events in the larger world. The hostilities between the British and Americans was of minor note compared to the raging Napoleonic Wars in Europe. (Even if the White House burned.) In China the Taiping rebellion resulted in the death of 20 million people. And what of trends in style? Empire gowns, early Romantic art and the chic sighs of popular poets were all in fashion. Art historican Buck Pennington takes us back to see what it looked like and what we can still hear from those days. The Locust Grove Afternoon Lecture Series is held the first Wednesday of each month. Dessert and coffee are served at 1:00 pm with the lecture immediately following at 1:15 PM.
