Land Between The Lakes, in partnership with the “Friends of LBL,” are thrilled to offer a presentation about bats. Batty about Bats will be held Monday, November 10, at 6:30 p.m. in the Golden Pond Planetarium located inside the Golden Pond Visitor Center at Land Between The Lakes (LBL) National Recreation Area. Participants will learn amazing facts about bats and clear up myths surrounding bats.  Did you know we would not have bananas, peaches, cashews, or even chocolate if it weren’t for bat pollinators? We would have a lot more mosquitoes.  A single gray bat can eat 3,000mosquitoes a night!  Scientists are studying bats for advances in medicine and sonar and to help blind people.  So join us, meet some live bats, take home some fun bat activities, and learn why we like to say “Real Mammals Fly!” Our speaker, Vicky Beckham Smith, is known as "The Bat Lady".  She began volunteering at The Birmingham Zoo in 1997, presenting bat programs and later leading workshops for teachers.  She now works with the American Zoo and Aquarium Association’s Taxon Advisory Group for Bats on projects for conservation and resource boxes sent to educators in Madagascar, Papua New Guinea, Guam, and Rota. Pre-registration is not required for this program.  The program fee is $3.00 for adults and $2.00 for children 12 years old and under.
