Students often experience difficulties during the holiday season. Unfortunately, a time of joy and celebration for many can be an especially challenging time for those in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. The risk of rejection and coming to terms with their own identity can result in estrangement from both family and friends.
Four years ago the University of Louisville’s Office for LGBT, and a few concerned community members, noticed there was a significant number of students who did not have a place to spend their Thanksgiving holiday. For these students, the cost of being LGBT included the loss of their support system. Their stories led to the first Alternative Thanksgiving event at U of L. The event brought students and community members together for a shared dinner, in a safe and welcoming location. This simple idea of a home-cooked meal and a network of support has become one of the most treasured student events of the entire year.
This year the community has decided to take an even bolder step in supporting its LGBT youth by launching the Feast for Equality Dinner. This event will help to provide much-needed financial resources to the Office for LGBT Services, and will help send the message that our youth are important throughout the entire year. The Office for LGBT Services at U of L is the only one of its kind in Kentucky, so it’s important to make sure it has ample resources to meet the needs of its rapidly growing student population.
Please join us at the inaugural Feast for Equality dinner. It is now more important than ever to wrap our collective arms around the youth in our community. Along with a delicious meal and an evening of celebration, your attendance will send the critical message that you are an ally to all LGBT young people, that you are committed to their success, and that you invite them to have a welcome and much-deserved place at the table.
