On Friday, Oct. 28 from 6-8 p.m., the Gallery at The Brown Hotel will host a reception to celebrate the opening of “Le Coeur du Cheval (The Heart of the Horse).” The exhibition opens just in time for Breeders’ Cup and features equine art and portraiture by Louisville-based artist Jaime Corum. Racing fans won’t want to miss the special sneak preview of Corum’s life-size portrait of Breeders’ Cup champion Zenyatta. Wine, cheese and mini-Hot Browns—a Brown Hotel specialty—will be served at the reception, which is free and open to the public. The “Le Coeur du Cheval” exhibit will remain on display through Friday, Dec. 9. For more information, please call (502) 583-1234.
Corum, who earned her master’s degree in fine arts from the University of Kentucky, paints commissioned portraits and original works depicting horses. She has created portraits of champion thoroughbreds like Secretariat, Curlin and Rachel Alexandra, as well as dressage horses and jumpers. Some of her work also ventures into mythical archetypes of the horse like the Pegasus. Her passion for horses is reflected in her statement about the show:
“At the Heart of the Horse you will find a combination of gentleness and strength, generosity and competitive fire. In my work, I strive to capture this inner character of the horse along with the purely physical beauty. This is made easier by the fact that a horse’s character is written so clearly on the surface. Emotions ripple over the horse’s outer being like waves passing over water and can give a single horse many ‘faces.’ The magnificent Zenyatta, for example, can go from fierce racing machine to a gentle giant nuzzling her adoring fans in an instant. I love how attuned horses are to the spirit of the moment! They show their emotions freely and naturally, having not taken up the habit of hiding them like humans do. This beautiful soul housed in such magnificent equine form is my eternal inspiration. My new work seeks to get ever closer to the heart of the horse.”
The Gallery at The Brown Hotel features local artists on a quarterly basis in order to bring awareness to Louisville’s visual arts scene. It is located on the first floor of the hotel.
