"I Remain Your Affectionate Son", the Civil War Letters of Private James C. Vanderbilt of the 23rd Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment
One year ago, local researcher and author Michael A. Peake began a search of the 23rd Indiana records for any additional information on Lucy Higgs Nichols. Among many other items of interest, he learned of the James C. Vanderbilt Letters, a New Albany soldier's letter collection preserved by his mother that exists in the Special Collections of the Indiana State Library. Combined with a very rich newspaper history of articles and soldier letters, Vanderbilt's letters became an excellent format to show the little known history of this deserving Indiana regiment composed of citizens from Floyd, Clark and Crawford Counties. Author Michael Peake is the author of "Blood Shed In This War, Civil War Illustrations by Captain Adolph Metzner, 32nd Indiana". A resident of Corydon, Indiana, Peake retired from Federal service in 1996 and has devoted his time to researching Germans who served both sides in the American Civil War, with special attention paid to Indiana's three ethnic regiments composed mostly of German immigrants. Bring your own lunch, drinks are provided. Free, but registration required (812-944-7336). Sponsored by the Carnegie Center, Inc.
