The Kentucky Fairness Alliance is hosting the 8th Annual Out and About Statewide Fairness Gala on Saturday, Nov 10 at the Kentucky Center for African-American Heritage in Louisville. Set to begin at 8 p.m., the gala is the nonprofit organization’s biggest fundraiser of the year.

The Kentucky Fairness Alliance is an education and advocacy network dedicated to advancing equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, Kentuckians. Since 1993, the Kentucky Fairness Alliance has been instrumental in defeating over 98% of all bills and amendments in Frankfort targeting LGBT people for discrimination. The group works throughout the state with localized organizations and have organized and lobbied to pass city and county-wide fairness ordinances in Lexington, Covington, and Henderson and most recently have worked in Richmond and Berea.

“We at the Kentucky Fairness Alliance are honored to be able to host this event for an eighth year to say thank you to our faithful supporters,” said David Corbett, Kentucky Fairness Alliance Chairperson. “We'll also be presenting our annual scholarships to future leaders of the Kentucky LGBT community, as well as recognizing individuals and organizations who have had a profound impact in the Kentucky LGBT movement in 2012."

Those being recognized include author Jason Howard who will be accepting the Mark England Scholarship. Howard’s most recent work includes A Few Honest Words: The Kentucky Roots of Popular Music. He is the coauthor of Something's Rising: Appalachians Fighting Mountaintop Removal. In May, Howard co-founded Bereans for Fairness, a grassroots organization committed to establishing a fairness ordinance that would extend protections against discrimination in employment, housing and public accommodations to individuals based upon perceived sexual orientation and gender identity.

The Executive Committee of Louisville Metro Democratic Party will be recognized for their efforts on behalf of marriage equality. Prior to the Democratic 2012 platform, the committee voted to endorse the proposal for marriage equality and urged its adoption, even though Kentuckians had passed a discriminatory amendment in 2004. The committee's action garnered national attention and was cited by proponents of the proposal as having helped its adoption at the convention.

Representative John Yarmuth will make an appearance to present the Award for Inclusiveness to Robley Rex of the Louisville VA Medical Center. Recently, the Center announced new policies for LGBT veterans representing major advances in terms of Fairness, equality and inclusiveness.

Music will be spun by DJ Fierce Tease with appetizers and dinner provided by Café Fraiche along with a silent auction. A special thank you to all the 2012 sponsors including General Electric, Brown Forman, Dignity Memorial, Horseshoe Casinos, Central Presbyterian Church of Louisville, Pandora Productions, GLSO of Lexington, Conliffe & Hickey Insurance, VOICES of Kentuckiana, Lee Etta Cummings, JoAnne Wheeler Bland, David Corbett, Nick Wilkerson, Peggy Pittman Munke.
