As a young boy, Frederic was mistakenly apprenticed to a band of tender-hearted pirates. Now at 21, soon to fall head-over-heels for the Major-General’s daughter, he disavows the pirate’s life forever…or so he thinks! Chicago theatre rebels The Hypocrites bring their delicious humor—along with guitars, banjos and beach balls—to Gilbert and Sullivan’s musical comedy about high seas adventure and answering the call of duty.

Founding Artistic Director Sean Graney created The Hypocrites in 1997, and it is currently run by Artistic Director Halena Kays and Managing Director Megan Wildebour. The Hypocrites are recognized as groundbreakers that defy the audience’s expectations. They have grown significantly in the past few years, receiving acclaim for productions at Steppenwolf Garage, Goodman Theatre, Museum of Contemporary Art, DCA Storefront, Chopin Theater and nationally at American Repertory Theater (Cambridge, Mass.). The company’s smash-hit production of Our Town, directed by MacArthur Genius Award winner David Cromer, transferred in 2009 to Off-Broadway, Los Angeles and Boston. The American Theatre Wing, best known as the creator of the Tony Awards, presented The Hypocrites with one of the 2013 National Theatre Company awards. Since the company’s founding, they have produced over 50 mainstage productions and 8 festival pieces securing 23 Joseph Jefferson Citations and 2 After Dark Awards. In Greek, the word “hypocrite” means “actor,” or someone who pretends to be what they are not. However, the company’s name is actually inspired by Eugène Ionesco’s Notes and Counternotes. According to the playwright, a person cannot be held to one idea. Ionesco consistently contradicts himself throughout the book, hence its title and The Hypocrites’ name.
