Lawlapalooza 2013
Lawlapalooza, the Louisville legal community's annual battle of the bands that benefits the Judge Ellen B. Ewing Fund, will be held Thursday, October 17, at 6 p.m. at Phoenix Hill Tavern (644 Baxter Ave.; 589-4957). Tickets will be available at the door. Eight bands are registered to battle and each includes at least one attorney, alumna/e or law student. Fans vote for their favorite band by throwing tips in their favorite band's tip jar. The winning band is the one with the most money in its tip jar at the end of the evening. All proceeds benefit the Judge Ellen B. Ewing Fund.

Join the Kentucky Science Center for exBEERiment, featuring local and eclectic beer tastings, the science of home brewing, and a night of camaraderie throughout the entire building. Learn about the different ingredients in beer, what makes it fizzy (or flat), the chemistry required to make your own brew, and the science behind cooking with beer! Must be 21 or older to attend.

Moonshine Enthusiast Workshop
Moonshine University at Distilled Spirits Epicenter will offer a full day Moonshine Enthusiast class that will explore the infamous spirit, from its history in the hills to its modern, legal incarnation. The hands-on workshop includes a cooking and fermentation demonstration, participation in the distilling process and a sensory evaluation. Throughout the day, attendees will learn about key terms used in making moonshine; the different types of stills; and the production process. Participants will not only enjoy a lesson on the history of moonshine culture, but will also get hands-on experience in the cooking/fermentation and distillation processes in the Grease Monkey Distillery. The nuances of corn shine, sugar shine and mixed grain liquors will be revealed through a sensory evaluation, and participants will also learn the difference between wild fermentation and pitched fermentation.

Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular Louisville
The Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular began in Oxford, Massachusetts in 1988. It’s entertainment for the entire family. The Louisville event, , will be held in Iroquois Park with 5,000 carved pumpkins lining a ¼-mile trail, illuminated at night as an “art show” daily from dusk to midnight during the week and 1 a.m. on the weekends. Proceeds benefit the Louisville Metro Parks Foundation & Kosair Charities.

Mayor's Fall Hike
Families can enjoy the fall colors in Jefferson Memorial Forest at the Mayor’s Healthy Hometown Hike and Outdoor Adventure. Participants can get a pumpkin, take a hay ride, and hike trails of various lengths through the Forest at the height of fall color. The ninth annual hike is part of the Mayor’s Healthy Hometown Movement, encouraging better health and wellness by highlighting opportunities for increased physical activity. The event is free to the public and the first 500 participants receive a T-shirt. Mayor Greg Fischer will kick off the event before the hiking and other activities. Activities include a children’s nature exploration area, Alpine Tower climbs, pumpkin decorating for the kids, hayrides, archery, and canoe and kayaking demonstrations. The Forest’s volunteer trail team and staff will lead hikes at various skill levels and introduce visitors to the native plant gardens, bird blind and animal exhibits.
