Registration opens Sunday, March 7 for the spring session of Heartland Music Together , an early music program for children from infancy to kindergarten. Featuring ancient folksongs from around the world—often with different musical rhythms than more familiar American styles—to more modern popular works, Music Together incorporates movement, rudimentary instrument play and, above all, fun for kids and their caregivers.
“When you teach your child these songs, you’re giving a gift to your great-grandchildren,” says director Miriam Klein. “When you share music with your child you give them a musical experience that will help them be musical for the rest of their life. You get to have a great time with your child now and have a lot of fun and help them develop a lifetime skill.”
Even if you don’t expect your child to become a classical pianist, everyone can benefit from a bit of musical activity, especially little ones with energy to burn or moms, dads and grandparents with an hour to spend. “Everybody has a capacity to be musical, and having a experience of music is about being a person,” Klein says. “It's worldwide. We’re helping people to connect to their music. Whether they’re ‘gifted’ or not, it's fun. It’s about being human beings.”
Along with Klein, classes are taught by professional singer Karen Hild, Lorna Dries and new instructor Krystle Middlemiss. The flagship Highlands venue, St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 2233 Woodbourne Ave., offers the majority of classes within the Heartland Music Together chapter. (Although some locations are held on the grounds of houses of worship, the program itself is nondenominational.)
Enrollment is limited, and classes begin the week of April 5. Interested parents (and kids!) are invited to attend a free demo classes at St. Andrews.
