The rescheduled and much anticipated Germantown Beer Walk has a new element this year: the Miss Germantown-Schnitzelburg pageant. An event that is currently solely on facebook will be brought to the public with the crowning of the democratically-elected winner at the beer walk this Saturday, May 8th. In order to vote, visitors to the pageant facebook page “like” posted pictures of the contestants, of which there are 11 females and one male. People can vote for more than one contestant, and the one with most “likes” will be crowned Miss Germantown-Schnitzelburg.
The only qualifications for contestants to have entered were to submit a photograph of themselves wearing the now-famous “I <3 Germantown-Schnitzelburg” t-shirt , and to be at least 21-years-old because one of the prizes is beer. There won’t be a bikini, talent, or question-and-answer portions to the contest, only the posted pictures. This seems a bit like a beauty contest, but how many pageants are not?
While the pageant was a joint idea by those that frequent the Germantown-Schnitzelburg facebook page , the default moderator is Dan McMahon because he is the moderator of the facebook group. McMahon doesn’t see this pageant as so much of a beauty contest as it is a popularity contest because friends usually vote for friends. This is a valid assumption considering that the Germantown-Schnitzelburg neighborhoods seem more like a giant group of buddies that happened to settle in the same area; so the pageant, like most other events held in these neighborhoods, is a way to bring the community together. Also, the general excitement and support from the community emphasizes the fun spirit of the contest.
There will only be one winner, no second place or runner-ups, and she (or he) will win the pictured tiara, flowers from Schulz's Florist, a 12-pack of beer, pizza from Danny Mac’s Pizza, and a $40 to a place of the winner’s choosing. Voting started today and will be open until 11:59pm on May 7th. The winner will be crowned at the beer walk at a currently undetermined location. To vote, please visit the Miss Germantown-Schnitzelburg facebook page.
