When I first started researching One Eskimo, I listened to the song "Kandi," which was instantly recognizable, although I couldn't figure out why. I assumed it has been in heavy rotation on the WFPK playlist, and indeed, the single from their self-titled debut album reached #1 on the US AAA radio chart.
This London band is fronted by smoky-voiced singer-songwriter Kristian Leontiou with Adam Falkner on drums, guitarist Pete Rinaldi, and Jamie Sefton on bass and horns. (On a completely trivial, but grim side note for true crime followers, murder victim Meredith Kercher once appeared in one of Leontiou's music videos. She was the young Briton killed in Perugia, Italy -- a sensational crime for which American student Amanda Knox and two others were convicted by an Italian court.)
Opening for One Eskimo is Leeds-based band Scars on 45 along with Hugo, a bluesy singer whose debut album is called "Old Tyme Religion." Born in England and raised in Thailand, Hugo Chakrabongse is a former actor and model and, in another stroke of weird trivia, is the great grandson of Thai monarch King Rama V.
Tickets for the show at Zanzabar are $10, available at the door, at ear-X-tacy or via Ticketfly.com . Below is the video for One Eskimo's hit "Kandi":
