Memphis brings about Huey Calhoun, a stock boy-turned-hit local DJ known for playing rock n roll records and his catchphrase "Hockadoo!" While in a 1950s black club, Calhoun begins flirting with Felicia, a talented singer and sister of the club owner. The two soon began a relationship, both professional and romantic, that will take them through the heights and the prejudices of the era.
David Bryan (of Bon Jovi fame) and Joe DiPietro created the lyrics, music, and book for Memphis, which opened on Broadway in October 2009. The musical has been performed more than 600 times at the Shubert Theatre, is still there, and earned the Best Musical Tony in 2010. A national touring production of Memphis is expected to begin later this year.
Memphis was filmed live on Broadway during performances in January and will be shown in select cinemas nationwide, including the three mentioned earlier, between April 28 and May 3.
