So for those of you who are curious about new and exciting things going on in the local craft beer scene, I just had the pleasure of sitting down with Adam and Andrew, two of the owners of, the soon to be formed, Against The Grain Brewery. You might remember that I had a conversation with Jeremy Rathfon a few weeks ago about his foray into the craft beer world, LouBrew (and he can still use some love, so if you haven't checked out his Kickstarter page yet, please do so), and I am happy to say that I am just as excited about what the guys at Against The Grain have proposed.
While a lot of what they are planning is still in the "secret" phase due non-disclose agreements about things such as all the players involved or locations they are in negotiations with to purchase, I am able to say that tentatively they are looking at a location somewhere possibly in NuLu or Downtown. Adam and Andrew both have experience with not only home brewing, but with Adam having also spent time working for BBC and learning more of the art from their brewers and Andrew having spent multiple years in management at Outback Steakhouses and Bonefish Grill . Throw in the skill sets of some of the other partners and you have yourself a brew pub that they are planning on being a smokehouse, with about 40% of the menu dedicated to our vegetarian friends out there who enjoy a great beer as well, and with as much locally sourced fare as possible.
When I asked them about their vision for types of beers they plan on brewing that's when I started getting really pumped. They don't plan on always having a specific type of beer on tap such as an Against The Grain Pale Ale or an Against The Grain Porter, but are thinking more of a rotating tap system where one tap will always be dedicated to a hoppy beer and another always dedicated to a malty style, etc, etc, etc. One thing they said that really intrigued me was that they said they'd always like to have one handle dedicated to a smoked beer, which is music to my ears AND taste buds, being that it is one of my favorite styles.
If everything falls into place they would like to be open by September at the earliest or October at the latest to be able to take advantage of at least some of the pleasant Fall weather for sitting outside, but said that even if things don't go as planned that they will still be serving beer to the fine people of Louisville no matter what the weather may be when they open their doors. If you'd like to talk to the guys and see what they're all about they will be pouring some of their craft soda at the LIBA Brewfest on July 1st (sorry guys, no beer just yet) and if you don't mind, show them some love by "Liking" them on Facebook by following this link -- Against The Grain Brewery . I'll hopefully be filling you all in on more of the "secret" details in the coming weeks as I asked the guys to keep me up to date on what they've got going on and to let me know when they are able to disclose certain info, so stay tuned.
