Santa is a a slacker and left me the task of reviewing Louisville's list twice!
2011 was a mixed bag for the city of Louisville. We made a lot of lists this year, some we can be proud of, some we can be ashamed of, and one that will just make you want to roll over and go to sleep! Here's a quick look back at some of the rankings.
First, let’s go over the good:
(Andrew Jameson from Parenting.com)
BEST CITIES FOR FAMILIES – Parenting Magazine’s annual list of great palaces to raise your family, included the River City at #10. They cited affordable housing, lots of parks and attractions like the Slugger Museum and more. (See the entire list here)
100 BEST COMMUNITIES FOR YOUNG PEOPLE
– America's Promise Alliance had Louisville on it's yearly awards list. The awards have been presented for 5 years, Louisville has made the list all five years. The Lane Report
said Louisville was recognized for having innovative partnerships and programs shared with Louisville Metro Government, Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS), Metro United Way, local businesses and non-profit service providers.
More Good News:
TOP TEN COLLEGE TOWNS of 2011 -
Livability.com ranked Louisville #8. They loved the arts, culture and music scenes in Louisville, shorter commutes and lower cost of living. See the College Town list here:
TOP 10 Luckiest Cities in America
- Men's Health named Lousiville as the 9th Luckiest City. What makes a town lucky, according MH it’s “the most hole-in-ones, fewest lightning strikes (including the fatal kind) and deaths from falling objects; and least money lost on lottery tickets and race betting” Read my story about it here:
The TOP 10 Tastiest Towns in The South - This list was just announced, Southern Living Magazine named Louisville as one of it's “10 tastiest towns". They are doing online voting to determine the winner. You can read a story about it and vote by clicking here:
Now the BAD:
TOP 5 HYPERTENSION HOTPSOTS
- Don't let this get your blood pressure up, but Sperling's named Louisville #3. We are near the top of that list because of the “rates of hypertension and hypertension prescriptions per capita, as well as the prevalence of several lifestyle factors that may lead to the development of hypertension.” So put down that donut, salt shaker and grab a bran Muffin instead. (list here
TOP 5 MOST CONGESTED CITIES (#4) -
I am not talking about the Sherman Minton bridge being closed. I’m talking NASAL CONGESTION. Can you say “Ohio Valley Crud”. (see list here)
TOP 5 SADDEST CITIES
- While Men’s Health named us a “Lucky” city, they didn’t say that would improve our mood. Louisville was named as one of the “TOP 5 SADDEST CITIES”. They had a formula for how they determined that but I was too bummed to read it. See the list here!
TOP 10 MANLIEST CITIES IN AMERICA - No we didn't make the top ten, we were #13. What made us so unmanly, well “factors included the number of home furnishing and décor stores, cafés/coffee shops, sushi restaurants, “modern” male apparel stores and cupcake shops. ”
But the final list that Louisville made is the one that can have the biggest affect on you.
#1 MOST SLEEPLESS CITY IN AMERICA - Sperling’s said “Louisville residents have trouble getting a restful night’s sleep, 1 out of every 9 days. And, it’s twice as likely to be women who can’t sleep. ” Many pointed to the many 24 hour jobs here, UPS Worldport and all the Hospitals come to mind. The report noted that not getting the proper rest can have many health and psychological consequences, some mentioned on the previous pages.
Life it’s all about balance. Good and Bad are often just in the eye, or survey, of the beholder. But as we welcome in the NEW YEAR, and you’re making your list (resolutions), put getting enough rest on there.
Who knows it could tip the balance in our favor for 2012!
Happy New Year!
