Ladies and gentlemen, I am pleased to announce that I am once again a college student. Yes, I may be in my mid-20s and lacking a Bachelor's Degree, but things like childbirth and monetary issues and the like tend to keep one from academia. It's amazing to be surrounded by so many young people fresh from high school; a four-year education plan, if followed, means that most of my peers achieved their degree around age 22, which puts me four to eight years older than most of my fellow students. One kid almost bumped into me and said, “Sorry, sir.” Sir! Did he think I was a teacher perhaps? True, my sexy facial hair and nice-casual attire may have lent some maturity to my features, but really.
But we're not here to talk about that; here we have the return of our weekly feature, What's Playing at the Floyd Theater? The Floyd Theater being, of course, the bright and cozy center for all things film on the University of Louisville campus.
It kicks off tonight, Thursday, with The Place Beyond the Pines, the new film by Derek Cianfrance, director of the fantastic Blue Valentine (which is especially poignant if viewed with your wife whilst undergoing your own eerily similar marital issues [see also: Take This Waltz]). Ryan Gosling stars as Luke, a new father who turns to bank robbery to take care of his lover and child. But all is not well as he is pursued by a rookie cop desperate for justice. The Place Beyond the Pines will screen twice, at 5:00 and 8:00.
Come back this weekend for one of four screenings of Now You See Me , in which a group of four magicians pull of some truly astounding feats: international bank robberies without leaving the room, showering the money down among the crowd. This, understandably, pisses some people off, and they will stop at nothing to get to the bottom of the illusion – or is it? Now You See Me will screen Friday and Saturday at 5:00 and 8:00.
The Floyd Theater is located on the third floor of the Student Activities Center on the U of L campus. Complete details can be found at the SAB Film Committee Facebook page .
