Mama’s Hip , the natural and attachment parenting store in the Highlands, has two new offerings to partner with the many types of classes, seminars, and groups for parents needing support in and around Louisville. They include filling mamas up with essential information and places to turn to for help that can sometimes overwhelm new mothers, as well as a strong support system for postpartum mamas.
Shannon Stone, the owner and founder of Mama’s Hip, is on a mission to make postpartum support mainstream in our area. Mama’s Hip truly is a community center, a meeting place, and a communally driven outlet for parents in Louisville to lean on each other, gain support, teachings, advice, and growth through the close-knit groups and mutual respect that has been created there together. Shannon wants to “Rebuild the Village”, and hopes that parents will seek information through all of the support groups for parents in any stage of their parenting and/or pregnancy journey.
The New Mama Essentials class is a drop-in group that meets every Thursday from 3-4:30 at Mama’s Hip. Facilitated by Shannon Stone, it is co-led by various experts in the mama/baby field throughout the area. In this new mama group, participants will engage in a variety of topics pertaining to newborns and babies and feeding, fussiness, baby wearing, cloth diapering, postpartum care, and more. Remember new mamas: you are not alone and there is a support system in place for you through Mama’s Hip. That is what owner Shannon wants all mamas to come away with in a class such as this one, or any of the classes that are run through Mama’s Hip. The sessions for New Mama Essentials are $10 per class; you can purchase a 5-session card for $25. Check out the New Mama Essentials Facebook event page for more information as well.
In addition to the class offered for new mamas, there is a PPD support group starting at the Home of the Innocents on March 18. “You are not alone, and there is help available,” says Stone. If you are expecting or have recently had a baby and are suffering through questions such as feeling sad or depressed, having difficulty bonding with your baby, or worried about hurting yourself or your baby, consider checking out this new resource and collaboration. It will be every Tuesday from 6-7:30pm at the Open Arms Children’s Health building. It will be led by a licensed psychologist who works at the Home of the Innocents. Childcare will be provided by trained volunteers. The cost is $20 per session. See the flier attached below which has more information.
