The five pools that opened June 2: Algonquin Park, 1614 Cypress Street; Fairdale Pool in Nelson Hornbeck Park, 709 Fairdale Road; LaPorte Park, 2529 Bank Street; Norton Pool in Camp Taylor Park, 4201 Lee Avenue; and Shelby Park, 600 East Oak Street. The three pools that opened last week are: Breslin Park, 1388 Lexington Road; Sun Valley Park, 6505 Bethany Lane; and Watterson Elementary School Pool, 3900 Breckinridge Lane. Additionally, the indoor Mary T. Meagher Aquatic Center – at 201 Reservoir Road in Crescent Hill Park – is open seven days a week, year-round.
At Western High School’s pool (2501 Rockford Lane), a pump motor exploded on Friday afternoon as the pool was being prepared for its Saturday opening. A replacement part has been ordered, and should be installed in the next few days. Western is now scheduled to open on Thursday, June 7. The water at Hazelwood Elementary School’s pool (4251 Hazelwood Avenue) is not circulating properly, so the pool must be drained and refilled while repairs are made. Hazelwood is now scheduled to open on Saturday, June 9. Metro Parks will provide updates about these two pools online at www.louisvilleky.gov/MetroParks/recreation/summerpools.htm .
“Unfortunately, with the age of our pools, there’s a degree of uncertainty about the condition of their mechanical equipment and drains until you actually start filling them up,” said Jerry Brown, assistant director of Metro Parks. “Our crews always know to expect long hours when we’re bringing our summer pools into service, but they’ve been working nearly around the clock for the past two weeks. Many of our pools are past their life expectancy, and keeping them operating is a growing challenge.” The newest outdoor pools in the Metro Parks system are more than 30 years old, and some are twice that age. Over the past 15 years, use of these summer pools has dropped by 53 percent.
Standard outdoor pool hours are: Monday to Friday, noon to 6 p.m.; Saturday, 10 to 6 p.m.; Sunday, 1 to 6 p.m. All outdoor pools close one day a week for maintenance. Admission is $1.50 for children 17 and under and $2 for adults 18 and over. Photo identification is required for anyone age 9 or older; children 8 or under must be accompanied by a guardian with photo identification.
