There is, of course, plenty going on surrounding the Kentucky Derby in 2009, but other than a flourish of chapeau fashions on Oaks and Derby days, the hats used to be underserved.
Sponsored by the Courier-Journal/courier-journal.com, WAVE-3, and 102.3 THE MAX, The Outrageous Derby Hat Contest is a live event scheduled for Saturday, April 11, in the middle of Westport Village. Atherton High School Choir will perform at the beginning of the contest, which will be hosted by Lynda Lambert 102.3 THE MAX, and feature contestants modeling their Derby Hats for a live audience and a panel of celebrity judges. Winners will be announced at the end of the live event.
“This year we are adding a special category – The Villagers,” explains Suzanne Tiano, Westport Village Marketing Director. “All the businesses at Westport Village are creating a special hat to model at the event and then to display in their business as a silent auction to benefit Kosair Charities. The silent auction will close on Friday, April 24th.”
Contestants may enter at no charge, online beginning March 19th at www.courier-journal.com/contest or www.westportvillage.com, or visit the Underhill Associate office in Westport Village for a printed application. The entry form to win a Free Derby Hat from Croquis Boutique is also available online or in person. Three Adult Categories of Designer Hat, Handcrafted Hat, and Derby Themed Hat will each have a Win, Place, and Show winner. Two Children’s Categories of Youth Division age 4-10 and Aspiring Designer Division age 11-17 will each have a Win, Place, and Show winner.
The Outrageous Derby Hat Contest offers a full day of fun for the whole family. The Kosair Charities Children’s Derby Crafts area will feature make your own Derby hat with Courier-Journal newspapers, along with the opportunity to create Derby themed get well cards for Kosair Kids. Donations will be accepted. Pepperdinkle & Pals will provide storytelling and autograph sessions and the opportunity to buy merchandise with 40% of the proceeds donated to Kosair Charities. Other family activities throughout the Village will include music, inflatable jumpys, Funster Shriner clowns, magicians, face painters, and sidewalk chalk areas. Plus, all the shops and restaurants will have special activities in store.
A focal point of the day will be the 12 noon unveiling of the Kosair Charities Churchill Downs Playhouse. This replica of Churchill Downs was constructed by Waggener High School students and donated to Kosair Charities. It will also be displayed at the Kosair Charities Athletic Hall of Fame Dinner on Wednesday, April 29th, and at the Kosair Charities/Ronald McDonald House "Just Fore Kids" Golf Classic, Monday, August 31st, with plans to auction it off later in the year.
