It's a street party on Bayly as a renowned author and recognizable NPR voice breaks out the Sharpie and greets the fans.
Carmichael's Bookstore will host a reading and book-signing with author David Sedaris on Sunday, June 21st beginning at 4 PM at the Frankfort Avenue store. Sedaris will visit Carmichael's as part of his national tour for the paperback edition of his newest book, When You Are Engulfed in Flames.
While Sedaris is an accomplished and best-selling author, he is also well known for the essays he reads on National Public Radio. He skyrocketed to fame in 1992 after reading the "SantaLand Diaries" on NPR's Morning Edition. The essay recounts his strange but true experiences as an elf at Macy’s department store during the Christmas season. He is a regular contributor to Public Radio’s This American Life as well as Esquire, GQ and The New Yorker.
To celebrate Sedaris's visit to Carmichael's and to accommodate what is expected to be a large turnout for the event, the bookstore is throwing a street party for his fans. They've received a permit from the city to close Bayly Avenue between Frankfort Avenue and the parking lot behind the store (which will still be accessible) to provide space for overflow crowds. The event is free and open to the public. Seats inside the store will be available on a first-come, first-served basis on the day of the event, and Carmichael's will broadcast audio and video of the reading for fans outside.
The signing portion of David's visit will commence after the reading. It is being organized using line numbers, which are available at both Carmichael's locations and are free with the purchase of any Sedaris book or audio. David is very generous with his time, and everyone who comes to the event will be able to meet him and get a book signed.
Louisville Public Media, which broadcasts This American Life on WFPL on Saturday afternoons, is a sponsor of the event and is running a contest that will award free books, front row seats, and the first signing line numbers to the winners. For details, see WFPL.org.
