Bake sale on Wednesday to help library recover from flood damage

Consuming Louisville [3] is sponsoring a bake sale at Derby City Espresso [4] (331 E. Market St.) Aug. 26 from 4 to 8 p.m.--or when it's out of baked goods--to support the city's library. According to 89.3 WFPL [5], "floodwaters caused at least $1 million in damage to the library main branch [6]" (301 York St.) from the storm on Aug. 4. It remains closed during recovery efforts. All proceeds from the bake sale and $1 from every drink sold will benefit to The Library Foundation (Derby City Espresso serves delicious iced lattes and has one of the most intelligent beer selections in town). According to its website [7], more than 400,000 people visit the Main Library annually. Consuming Louisville's [8] publisher Michelle Jones [9] said the bake sale will feature "individual desserts (cookies, slices of cake and pie) as well as whole cakes, pies and breads" from 16 volunteer bakers, so you can feed either yourself or the huddled masses. Jones, who planned the event on her own initiative, has a simple goal: sell all the baked goods and raise money for the library. "My motivation was simple, to give the community a chance to help the library in some small way and have a little fun at the same time," Jones said. "Yes we can all donate individually but a community bake sale allows people to put their hands and their baking skills to use as well as their checkbooks in the service of doing good. And it allows the community to come out and socialize a little bit and have some fun." Derby City Espresso's owner, Matthew Landan, was happy to get involved when Jones approached him. "Libraries have always been a special place for me ever since I wandered into one when having a bad acid trip when I was 16 and sitting there waiting was the perfect solution" -- a book, said Landan. "Immersing myself in that book saved my life that night."
