This brewpub, located in the heart of St. Matthews, is the latest in this expanding, Lexington-based group. Lunch and dinner is classic bar food — like hot wings, shrimp poppers, burgers and ribs. The beer list includes the big American brands plus 24 microbrews. We hear it’s a happening late-night spot, too.
One of the handful of old-style bakeries remaining, this St. Matthews institution has a soda fountain with homemade brick ice cream and individual ices in addition to a full assortment of pastries, cakes and wedding cakes.
Choose one of the inventive (and modestly priced) Asian-inspired entrées, or create your own combination of stir-fry. The new “pick two” menu — including an appetizer and a smaller-portioned entrée — is a great choice for lunch.
Jack’s is the more casual, lounge area attached to sister restaurant Equus. Have a seat on one of the comfortable leather couches and order from a menu of dressed up American classics. Absolutely don’t miss the cocktails mixed by longtime bartender Joy Perrine.
Can’t travel? Head over to this new oriental restaurant in St. Matthews for an exotic meal to take you away. Charim loosely translates to “the table is set,” a welcoming message and dishes are prepared by chef Yeon Hee Chung just like she does in her home.
Stop into the Louisville outpost of this Austin-based Tex-Mex chain after shopping at the nearby malls. They have a full menu of the usual suspects — tacos, burritos and enchiladas, plus fresh margaritas. For something different, try the Elvis Green Chile Fried Chicken. It’s breaded in potato chips and served with green chile sauce.
Louisville’s only coal-fired oven makes pizza crust thin and crisp. Coals offers carefully composed 12-inch pies, one to try is the Highlands pizza which is topped with Dream Catcher Farm bacon, fresh mozzarella, cherry tomatoes and arugula.
Breakfast lovers shouldn’t miss Meridian Cafe. Offerings include superb French toast, a bagel sandwich with smoked salmon and wilted spinach, and hearty pastrami hash. If you’re more into lunch, check out the white bean burger or shitake mushroom sandwich.
