Leigh Ann Yost holds herself to a higher standard when it comes to her music and her life. "Do, or do not; there is no try", famously spoken by Yoda, is one of Leigh Ann's favorite quotes and right in line with her musical ambitions. With friends, family, co-workers, and fans from across Louisville in the audience, Leigh Ann took a deep breath and walked on stage, confident and determined. Leigh Ann offered a gracious thank you to those who made this night possible, playing solo before welcoming her band.
In an interview with Yost, she describes her band as, “a totally awesome band that is so much more than I deserve.” Yost’s humble approach to life is clear in her music. Paul Culligan (drums), Peter Searcy (cello), Mark Hamilton (lead guitar), Amos Hopkins (fiddle), and Bill Heuglin (bass) brought the clean and original sound of Leigh Ann’s music to fruition Friday as well as playing on the album. The audience could see the excitement on Leigh Ann's face through the first few tunes and then faint smile came over her face; the crowd know she was right at home.
Louisville musicians came to Uncle Slayton’s in support of Leigh Ann’s latest full length offering, As I Live and Breathe released under sonaBlast Records. The all inspiring events of Yost’s life heavily contributed to the material on this album; the beauty of giving life and seeing loved ones taken from this Earth. People of all ages literally packed Slayton’s to the hilt to catch a glimpse of Leigh Ann and hear her unique voice echo through the rustic and cozy room.
Leigh Ann played after Justin Lewis' acoustic set and before the Billy Goat Strut Revue. Yost and Lewis met at an open mic event at U of L and have been close friends since. Justin says, “She helped me out so much”, as he talked about Yost’s friendship. Upcoming plans are still tentative, but it is safe to assume fans will insist she play her latest album, live, a few more times. Yost’s following come from years of community involvement and genuine friendships with a great many people; all of whom seemed to be in one place Friday night.
As I Live and Breathe is available here: http://leighannyost.com/album/as-i-live-and-breathe. Tracks 1, 3, and 7 are particularly catchy tunes, although the entire album soothes the soul. Leigh Ann is still on cloud nine.
