A presentation of 1811 surgical procedures, Sunday at Historic Locust Grove [Classes and seminars]

Have you ever wondered how a doctor might amputate a limb to save your life 200 years ago? Find out at Historic Locust Grove. Then, take Afternoon Tea with the Jane Austen Society of Louisville.

Two hundred years ago, treating bleeding, making dental repairs, removing musket balls from injured bodies, amputating limbs and performing cranial surgery were done differently than technology allows in 2011. The procedures are among the common surgical techniques to be demonstrated in the first-person presentation "The Doctor in Mourning" in the manner of a former sea surgeon from 1811 at Historic Locust Grove, presented by the Jane Austen Society of Louisville.

Another Reason To Go To The Fair [Kentucky State Fair]

Sometimes the only place to go for answers is the State Fair.

Sometimes the only place to go for answers is the State Fair. There have been times when I've wrestled with, what felt like, the questons of the world. What I loved about this exhibit is the simplicity of the question posed. Really, who hasn't ever thought about what one can do with a llama (ahem..Michael Jackson)?

HullabaLOU review: Ben Folds [Music]

I'm still fighting it, too.

After tramping through the Downs the day before, my feet were not super happy to face another day of high heat and lots of standing. My only consolation was the prospect of a nostalgia filled day of music, the first of which was Ben Folds. My best friend introduced me to his music years ago while he was still part of Ben Folds Five, so I was looking forward to his set, heat baked and swollen footed as I was.

Springtime gardening tip #1: Use poo for mulch

Nobody produces poo like the Louisville Zoo, and they're extending their "Zoo Poopy Doo" compost and mulch sale to help get rid of the #2.
Because of overwhelming response, the Louisville Zoo has extended its spring Zoo Poopy Doo compost and mulch sales, adding Saturdays May 16 and 23. You can purchase quality hardwood bark mulch and Zoo Poopy Doo (which is made especially by our animals at the Zoo!) from 8 a.m. to noon May 16 and 23. Make your purchases at the ticket windows (in front of the Zoo entrance gates) then collect your mulch or compost in the Zoo’s bus parking lot. Mulch is $22.50 per load for small pick-up truck and $35 per load for medium to full size pick-up truck

Frazier Museum revisits fun from the past with Fontaine Ferry exhibit

Well before Kentucky Kingdom was the glimmer of a thought, another Louisville amusement park created thousands of memories and countless hours of fun.
Do you remember Sam and Sue? How about Hilarity Hall and Gypsy Village? What was your favorite ride? The Comet or The Whip? How many hours did you spend riding the Fontaine Ferry Carousel or swimming in the pool? From 1905 to 1969, Fontaine Ferry Park represented the very best of times for hundreds of thousands who enjoyed innocent hours of entertainment in the West Louisville amusement park on the banks of the Ohio River. For others, it was a sign of the times – a place they weren’t allowed access because of the color of their skin.

Huber's Orchard & Winery

It's that time of year again for a lot of Louisvillians: the journey up I-65N to Huber’s Orchard and Winery!
Just a few short miles up interstate 65 North is one of the region’s most cherished locations during the fall and pumpkin season. Located on 550 acres, the Huber family and their farm have been in operation in Starlight, Indiana since the mid 1800’s. While they grow pumpkins and Christmas Trees for the seasonal visitors, parts of the grounds are open year-round to help customers find some of the freshest fruits and vegetables in the area.
