One of my greatest and simplest pleasures is the tasting of a new beer. Aficionados treat the experience the way one would a fine wine: carefully pouring it into a glass, sniffing the aromas to detect subtle notes, and taking a small sip to ascertain the flavor and character of the beverage before digging in. This is not how one would treat beer such as Miller or Budweiser; the ritual would be pointless, as these are meant to be chugged in mass quantities without really being tasted (which is how they get away without having much flavor at all).
Our country is inundated with billboards and commercials featuring young, attractive people living life to the fullest, assisted by that alleged nectar of life: the pale yellow mass-produced lager beer. Growing up, I was told that beer tastes like urine. To one uneducated on the subject, such as I was, there is no beer beyond Budweiser, Coors, or Miller, and yes: it tastes like your toilet.

Here is the official press release:

So for those of you who are curious about new and exciting things going on in the local craft beer scene, I just had the pleasure of sitting down with Adam and Andrew, two of the owners of, the soon to be formed, Against The Grain Brewery. You might remember that I had a conversation with Jeremy Rathfon a few weeks ago about his foray into the craft beer world, LouBrew (and he can still use some love, so if you haven't checked out his
I recently dropped in on my good friends at the Bluegrass Brewing Company at 636 East Main Street to say hello and enjoy a pint of their semi-annual seasonal selection, farm house style Saison. According to beeradvocate.com, a Saison is a sturdy ale that was traditionally brewed during the winter months, to be consumed throughout the summer. According the BBC's tasting notes their Saison boasts aromas of citrus esters and bready malt, and has a full body dominated early by complex malt that will fade into tangy citrus note
On Tuesday, Melanie and David Gootee began cooking their Gas Up Chili in preparation for the Sixth Annual Chili & Brew Bonanza held at Kye’s II in Jeffersonville on Thursday.
“We started it (chili) on Tuesday, cooked it for about six hours, and then put it in the refrigerator for it to do its own thing,” said David.
Even though the second-place winning chili is actually Melanie’s recipe, the couple shared the responsibility of creating the chili that stood out from the others with its medium taste that derives from chicory; the secret ingredient.
New2Lou is hosting their monthly 2nd Wednesday Social tonight from 5:30pm-8:00pm at Bluegrass Brewing Company (BBC), 300 West Main St. in downtown Louisville. BBC has a new location across from the arena. Come try the locally brewed beer and meet some new people. The group will be located on the lower level in the back corner (all good things happen in back corners!).
Attention beer lovers (and that’s most of you, right?)! O’Shea’s, 956 Baxter Ave., is hosting Hop Week June 21–27, kicking off with a special dinner on Sunday, June 20.
