A habitable nest [Visual Art]

Artist Todd C. Smith is moving in, into the trees. Free artist talk Saturday (Jan 21) at Bernheim Forest.

I wonder if you asked artist Todd Smith if he could be any animal if he would choose an eagle. Smith has been making nests out of any material that is “found, recycled, reused or already owned” according to his Twitter account during his four-month art residency at Bernheim Forest. He has been able to use cardboard, aluminum cans, hand-formed staples made from bailing wire and there is even a tiny square window plus speakers! It’s officially become hi-fi!

Knock on wood [Visual Art]

Enjoy wood sculpture in its natural setting. Sculptress Heike Endemann exhibits her work at Bernheim.

If a tree falls in the middle of the forest, Heike Endemann makes a sculpture of it. Heike is a wood sculptress from Germany and is one of the 2011 Artists in Residence at Bernheim National Forest. Heike works with wood from fallen trees from the forest and transforms them to shapes that will leave you thinking, “how’d she do that?”

Scarecrow Jubilee at Bernheim [Family and parenting]

The great scarecrow migration is in full-swing at Bernheim Forest.

Evidence of the annual scarecrow migration has been spotted in Clermont, Kentucky. Even though the highly successful Colorfest has come and gone at  Bernheim Forest, the scarecrow are alive and well and displaying themselves in a wild rumpus throughout the arboretum. The Scarecrow Jubilee is on, folks.

The Home of the Innocents is holding their annual "Home Run" 10 and 5K's October 29th and is currently looking for entrants, volunteers, and supporters.

The Home of the Innocents is hosting their own 5 and 10K’s respectively at historic Bernheim Forest Saturday, October 29th, the races are an attempt to raise both money and awareness for this important charity that benefits children all over the Kentuckiana area.

Runners/Walkers are invited to attend as part of a team, which they can join or start; or enter individually while raising donations for the charity.

Fall plant sale, dealing with nuisances, and last hoorah of the insects. [Urban gardening]

Bernheim Forest events all day tomorrow (Saturday, Sept. 17th).

Bernheim Forest has loads happening on Saturday, Sept. 17th. Starting with the plant sale, attendees may peruse and purchase the Bernheim "Select" crop of species native to the region. Just quiz the Bernheim horticulture staff about the perks of including bunches of these plants in your yard space. Admission to the plant sale is solely the price of the vehicle ($5--which gets you into Bugfest, too!). The sale begins at 9am for non-members, 8am for members.

See a goat, eat like a goat [Urban gardening]

International Boer Goat Association 2011 Show at Expo and Wild Edibles of Summer at Bernheim (Saturday).

So, since it's legal to have a billy goat or two within the city limits (and they're the greenest way to landscape) I invite the urban gardener to take a look at some at the International Boer Goat Association 2011 Show at the Expo Center this weekend. The Junior U.S.

Never mow again! [Urban gardening]

No-Lawn Landscaping class at Bernheim tomorrow! Park your mower in the garage. Permanently.

The latest program in Bernheim's popular Smart Gardens and Landscapes series is tomorrow! Bernheim is asking folks to register before 4pm today for the hands-on workshop, but I'd ring them up at 502 955 8512 in the event of missing the deadline. I found they can be lenient.

Glenview Garden Club's gone greener [Urban gardening]

Glenview Garden Club incorporates downtown gardens.

The Glenview Garden Club has traditionally included gardens exclusively located within the historic Glenview community on the Town and Country Garden Tour. This year, the Glenview Garden Club has promoted the tour from a green angle--for the first time incorporating gardens located close, yet outside the Glenview area. The three gardens featured outside of the normal Town and Country Tour route may be found downtown. Since my personal interest in gardening rests in sustainable living practices (the more urban the better), I started the self-guided tour at these newly integrated gardens.

Fill your garden with Bernheim plants! [Urban gardening]

Bernheim Forest's annual BloomFest and Plant Sale Saturday.

I am so very done with the bi-polar weather. Is Spring here yet?

The folk at Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest seem to think so--or they're just bull-heading their way into it anyhow. This Saturday (May 21st) Bernheim is hosting their annual celebration of Spring: BloomFest!

Sometimes you feel like a nut...[Urban gardening]

Fruit and nut tree workshop at Bernheim Forest Saturday morning.

Wouldn't it be nice to go out on your porch/balcony/stoop this summer and pick some succulent fruit right there on the spot? Squeeze in some learning tomorrow morning at Bernheim Forest before celebrating at Thunder Saturday night. Bernheim's popular new series of gardening classes--"Smart Garden and Landscapes"--each center around teaching sustainable horticulture practices that are applicable to any space, no matter how much concrete surrounds your home.
