This month, Eastern high school seems to be a power house in the region. Producing the only native Kentuckian in the NBA’s All-Star game in current Celtic Rajon Rondo and now winning the regional basketball tournament, the Eagles seem to be on a hoops tear right in the heart of March.
Bellarmine University was the sight of the boys’ basketball regional championship when Eastern faced off against long-time rival Jeffersontown.
Friday is almost here and that means another exciting night of high school football in the Louisville area. Here is a look at some of the top games this week.
Central at Ballard
Central is off to a 1-1 start. The Yellowjacketts feature one of the city's top juniors, running back Anthony Wales. Wales got off to a hot start in Central's first game against Seneca, when he rushed for 339 yards. He followed that performance up by rushing for 158 yards a two scores against Lafayette.
Eastern's Lyonell Gaines is one of the top prospects in Region Seven. Now the 6-foot-4 forward is looking for a place to play in college. I caught up with Gaines and spoke with him about his recruitment.
Gaines averaged nearly 14 points per game this past season, as he helped lead the Eagles to a 21-9 record.
"The summer ids going pretty good," Gaines said. "I'm just trying to get better. I'm struggling with my shot right now, so I'm working on that."
