In 1913 Woodrow Wilson was sworn in as president of the United States, gas was about 8 cents a gallon and a true sports legend in the city of Louisville was born in the University of Louisville Cardinal.
An athletics representative for the school the Cardinal bird quickly became a staple, the animal selection was relatively simple. It was the state bird of Kentucky, and the city had an abundance of the red birds. In addition, it was an attempt to give the mascot a broader and more state wide appreciation.
“I believe they’ll find Charlotte people to be very warm, upbeat, hospitable, Southern and enjoyably overall. We welcome our friends from Louisville, whom we love, with the exception of when Louisville plays Carolina or Duke in basketball!!!” So started my conversation with good friend, Mike Donovan, foodie and radio god. Mike has lived in Charlotte for years, even used own a couple of restaurants.
In the words of former Arizona Cardinals Coach Dennis Green, "They are who we thought they were," and Tuesday night in the KFC YUM! Center, College of Charleston was just that- who we thought they were.
It's been long awaited, hyped up and discussed endlessly throughout the message boards, sports talks shows, etc. of Louisville Sports.
Now the moment is finally here.
The highly-touted Freshman, Kevin Ware, a 6'5 guard from Georgia, has officially joined the Louisville Cardinals Basketball team; participating in his first practice Wednesday afternoon.

Don't Call a travel agent today. Stay off Expedia. The servers may be down for a while today, as U of L fans are busy re-booking airline flights from Florida to Charlotte, North Carolina.
A funny thing happened while some were counting their oranges, Cincinnati (and WV) won and now U of L is headed THE BELK BOWL.
Both University of Louisville and University of Kentucky women’s basketball is in the midst of their first major homecomings. For Kentucky, they continue their homecoming tomorrow taking on Southern Miss. Louisville will open their homecoming series Sunday at two against Xavier.
In honor of this and because I established an all-cards and all-cats team for men’s basketball, I thought it would only make sense to combine the stars of UofL and UK women’s basketball and create An All Cards-Cats Team.
Well, one of the state’s biggest obsessions is just starting up, college basketball, most notably in this area, University of Louisville and the University of Kentucky.
Now, how these two teams will do in the regular season is difficult to say and quite frankly I don’t think anybody really cares about my conjecture. None the less, many will be getting a first view of the two teams in full effect tonight.
The Wildcats are suiting up for the Blue/White Scrimmage game tonight at seven at Rupp Arena, meanwhile the Cards are taking on Pikeville at the KFC Yum Center.
A graduate of Male High School, relief pitcher Sean Green seemed to have a great deal of raw talent. So much so that immediately following high school, Green was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays organization. An offer which the young pitcher declined, instead choosing to play for his hometown school the University of Louisville.
The pro’s interest of him never wavered, and after his junior season he accepted a position with the Colorado Rockies to begin in their farm league system, playing with the Asheville Tourists, the Tulsa Drillers, among others.
