East meets West in free musical performance Wednesday

It’s the week you’re most likely to hear “My Old Kentucky Home,” but have you ever heard it performed by a Chinese-American choir? This coming Wednesday, May 4, Chinese and Western entertainment will converge in the free, public “Concert on the Yangtze and Ohio Rivers” at the University of Louisville.

Louisville's Alexandria Mills wins Miss World pageant [News]

Recent high school grad wows 'em in China at event's 60th annual pageant.

Louisville's Alexandria Mills (nope, never heard of her either) was crowned Miss World at the event's 60th annual pageant Saturday, Oct. 30 in Sanya, China.

From Mills's biography on the Miss World website:

Shenzhen, China's rapid growth makes a mockery of Louisville's 'Possibility City' slogan

Chinese city's growth--not Fourth Street Live!--is a real accomplishment
Some facts about Shenzhen, China, one of the world's largest cities you've never heard of:
  • Population in 1979: 25,000
  • Population in 2007: 14 million
  • Tallest building in 1979: 5-story military barrack
  • Tallest building in 2009: 69-story Shun Hing Square
  • Compound annual economic growth between 1979 and 1989: 49.7 percent
  • Number of times I fell asleep during a one-hour massage at the Ritz-Carlton Shenzhen's spa: two

Kentucky Derby puts Louisville on the map in Shenzhen, China

Knowledge of city needs to be converted to visits to it though
A conversation I had at lunch Saturday afternoon in Shenzhen, China, which, at 12 time zones away, is literally the other site of the world: "Why have I heard of Louisville?" "It hosts the Kentucky Derby." "Of course." If Louisville were not home to the world's most famous horse race, how would I have answered that question? Mostly likely the question wouldn't have been asked. One of my biggest gripes about Louisville is locals who gripe about all of our out-of-town guests that first weekend in May.
