69°F8:25 AM The VOICES of Kentuckiana holiday concert this weekend was a true gift. The concert, "Voices of Holidays Past" was as nostalgic as the name implies. They delivered 18 selections from previous concerts over their 17 seasons.
An added bonus this concert was the introduction of the choir's new interim artistic director, Matthew Butterfield. Butterfield handily managed the 40-plus chorus and injected some great humor as well.
When we think of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker, the first thing that usually comes to mind is the glorious final act, performed by the Sugar Plum Fairy and her court of delicious sweets. This was the scene I was eager to see when I sat down for an evening performance of the Brown-Forman Nutcracker, now running at the Kentucky Center for the Arts, last Friday night. What I was not prepared for was the sumptuousness of the entire ballet, which is a veritable feast for the eyes and ears.
Like many local merchants, the Knob Creek Gun Range in West Point is running a sale this holiday season. But betting that only infuriated Christians buy guns (likely to stock up for The War on Christmas), per its radio ads, the discounts only apply to shoppers who mention the ad and
Shopping for Christmas presents gives me a headache. I love the hustle and bustle and general merriment of the holidays as much as the next person, but when it comes down to picking out a unique, yet feasibly priced, yet somehow personal, yet also not too weird Christmas present, I come up with a big fat blank. I have bought my father so many ties and handkerchiefs he has started to weave a comforter. To my shame, I have bought my girlfriends many premade baskets of "wild rose lavender symphony" or "simply soothing exotic coconut lime" bath supplies.
Last night was not a very Christmas-y evening with mild temperatures and drizzling rain - a night I will take over twenty degrees and snow any night of the year. Regardless of the deceptive weather it is a fact that Christmas is a mere eleven days away, and so with that in mind I popped the cap on a bottle of Schlafly Christmas Ale and forced myself into the holiday spirit for you, the reader.
We all know the story: young Marie is given a beautiful nutcracker for Christmas who magically comes to life Christmas Eve. Our young heroine is subsequently caught in an epic battle between the Nutcracker's troops of gingerbread men and toy soldiers and the minions of the evil Rat King. A dazzling suite by Tchaikovsky moves the audiences from fear to triumph as the Nutcracker is transformed into a handsome Prince who trounces the Rat King, and he and Marie are welcomed as heroes by the beautiful Sugar Plum Fairy in a final glorious waltz.
I stopped by the tech rehearsal for Voices of Kentuckiana as they prepare for their upcoming holiday concert this weekend. If you did not know it ahead of time, you would never guess that this local, all-inclusive chorus is also non-auditioned. Their warm sound immediately puts you in the holiday spirit and gets you thinking of holidays past.
