The Earth Day party of the century rages on all month at the Louisville Zoo
Who says Earth Day can only be celebrated on April 22? The Louisville Zoo is challenging this notion by hosting a whole month's worth of Earth Day festivities that honor the beauty of our environment and promote the Zoo's ongoing conservation efforts.

Earth Day was established more than forty years ago as an environmental "teach-in" designed to raise awareness about ecology and the preservation of our precious ecosystem. Since then, and thanks to its official sanction by the UN, it has been celebrated every year in more than 175 countries around the world, and has energized whole populations to create lasting policies that protect our planet's future.

The Louisville Zoo's New Year's Eve Snooze lets young animal-lovers ring in 2012 with some wild friends [Family & Parenting]

This year, for the first time ever, the Louisville Zoo is inviting young guests between the ages of 8 and 12 to celebrate New Year's Eve with a huge slumber party on zoo grounds.

Children love slumber parties -- it's a fact -- which is the reason why so many look forward to the New Year holiday: it's the one night when many families deem it appropriate for youngsters to stay up past their bedtime to celebrate. The Louisville Zoo has capitalized on this trend this year by offering the first-annual "Zoo Snooze," the wildest way to ring in 2012!

Mostly known for its music, Forecastle Festival also focuses on environmental activism

Event allows area groups to network and collaborate
While music gets most of the attention surrounding the Forecastle Festival, it's just one of the event's three pillars. In 2003, the festival's second year, Forecastle Festival Capt. J.K. McKnight added activism and art to the lineup. And they've been integral parts of the event ever since. As has been the case since 2005, activist activities will focus on the environment at the festival, to be held July 10-12 at the Riverfront Belvedere.

Celebrate Earth Day in Louisville by picking up, going green and having fun

Here are some Earth Day activities in The Ville this week (most of which take place this weekend rather than on April 22).

I hate Earth Day.

While the first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970, no one save a few stinky hippies gave a smoldering compost pile about it until the early 1990s. And by that time, April 22 had become an important day for another reason: in 1976 it became my birthday.
