Churchill Downs will host its only Downs After Dark program offered during its fall meet tonight, Friday, November 18. The theme is Animal Kingdom (named after this year's Kentucky Derby winner) in which fans are encouraged to wear animal print attire to match the track’s Animal Kingdom decor.
Churchill Downs’ “Downs After Dark” is designed to incorporate nightlife, racing and dancing as evening falls upon the historic Twin Spires. Attendance for night racing events has averaged 27,898. That is compared to an average attendance of 7,500 for a typical Friday afternoon program. The last Downs After Dark attendance of 27,787 was the largest of the three Downs After Dark events held this year. On-track wagering for that night was $1,286,037, more than double the wagering on a typical Friday afternoon card.
The social tornado that is Downs After Dark returns tonight to Churchill Downs.
Interested in following my handicapping system and probably losing $25.40 in the process? Copy my picks.
Interested in picking horses because my wife and one of our horse racing writers, Margaret, likes their names? Copy hers (assume all bets are $2 to win for her).
As with all good marriages, we're keeping score (it'll be posted tomorrow).

Zach: $0.50 trifecta box on 2, 4, 9
Margaret: Scarlett Go' Hara
The show must go on, even amidst the cleanup from a tornado over the Churchill Downs backside. After a confirmed tornado touched down over the Churchill Downs backside Wednesday night, track officials cancelled Thursday's scheduled live racing, simulcasting, and training. Nine barns were damaged, with trainer Steve Margolis' barn receiving the most damage. Horses and backside workers were displaced from their homes, and the track chapel was damaged.
Father's Day is this Sunday, but Churchill Downs has great activities planned for Friday and Saturday to help you kickoff a weekend of celebrating the special dads in your life.
