For most taking part, the trip to Louisville was just another step towards reaching their personal goals and dreams of playing professional basketball. For others it was all about the experience of trying out and seeing where they measured up against solid competition.

This past weekend at the Hoops facility in east Louisville, 264 athletes from all around the world came together to take part in tryouts for the NBA's Development League.

The tryouts had an international appeal.  Nine countries were represented at the tryouts:  Congo, Ecuador, Jamaica, Kazakhstan, Niger, Puerto Rico, Romania, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Sweden.

Carol Belser: Master Florist [Kentucky Derby]

Just before dawn on the first Saturday in May, Carol Belser adorns the Churchill Downs winner’s circle with roses. She appreciates this early-morning moment as the only part of her day that is almost completely silent. During the rest of her hectic weekend there is little time for reflection.

One of my main concerns with traveling to South America with Jack was keeping him healthy on our trip.  I am an admitted germaphobe, so I seriously would have put that kid in a plastic bubble if it was socially acceptable. It was difficult to decide with our Pediatrician which vaccinations were imperative for travel and which we could forgo.

Family fun in Quito, Ecuador: Louisville's Sister City

My family just got back yesterday from a 8-day trip in Ecuador. I was surprised by all of the family-friendly stuff there was to do in Quito, and the surrounding areas. Here are some of the highlights from my trip.

Have baby, will travel: Awesome travel gear for kids and where to find it in Louisville

My mantra for travel is to pack light. This is way easier said than done now that I'm traveling with Jack and all of this baby accoutrement. Here are some of my must-have travel items (almost all from local stores) that will keep your suitcase light and your children happy.

My mantra for travel is to pack light. I learned this lesson several years ago the hard way. As novice travelers, my husband and I packed two ridiculously large suitcases and had to carry them up an eight-flight staircase in Amsterdam that was about as narrow as my attention span. Those Dutch know how to bike and build ships... elevators are not their thing. No wonder they're all so skinny.

You're never too young or old to learn a new language. Los Monitos Language Center offers instruction in a multitude of languages to all ages.
I took over nine years of Spanish while attending public school and I can safely say that I remember very little. Aside from knowing some random vocabulary and a few dirty words, my Spanish is limited to asking where the bathroom is and singing "La Cucharacha".

How to make flying with kids a little less terrible

Some tricks of the trade that will help your family fly the not-always-so-friendly skies.

I am in the throes of preparing for a trip to South America with my almost one-year-old son Jack. I've made lists of what I need to pack, investigated what medications we need to ward off typoid (more on this later!) and booked the dog f

Have baby, will travel: Louisville.com's family columnist embarks on a trip to South America

In two and a half weeks, I am flying down to Ecuador by myself with Jack. Yes... you read that correctly, I. Am. Taking. A. Baby. To. South. America. By. Myself. When I tell people this, their faces usually crumple to a mixture of pity, fear and incredulity.

In two and a half weeks, I am flying down to Ecuador by myself with Jack. Yes... you read that correctly, I. Am. Taking. A. Baby. To. South. America. By. Myself. Once we arrive in Quito, we will meet up with my husband (who is doing work in Peru) and some friends who live there and their brand new baby girl. When I tell people this their jaws drop. “You're flying on an airplane with Jack by yourself for over 6 hours? You're taking a baby to a third world country?!” Their faces usually crumple to a mixture of pity, fear and incredulity.
