Be aware. Familiarize yourself with the risks to you, your family and community. The more you know, the better you can identify and prepare to reduce those risks.

It sometimes seems like we here in Louisville have more than our share of natural disasters.  The beautiful Ohio River has a habit of jumping its banks every couple of years, and we’ve experienced some nasty tornadoes in recent memory.  We’re even located just East of the New Madrid Fault; so we can expect the odd earthquake from time to time.

The flood of August 4th, 2009 left a devastating wake of destruction throughout the Louisville area. And like many Louisvillians, I was upset to learn that one of the most hard-hit locations was the Kentucky Derby Museum.

Shut down ever since the flood, the museum has been painstakingly reconstructing its beloved exhibits ever since. Just in time for the 2010 Derby Festival kick-off, the Kentucky Derby Museum is ready to reopen its doors. And to celebrate this triumph, they're having a party...and you're invited!

Bake sale on Wednesday to help library recover from flood damage

Consuming Louisville sponsors event at Derby City Espresso to raise funds for The Library Foundation
Consuming Louisville is sponsoring a bake sale at Derby City Espresso (331 E. Market St.) Aug. 26 from 4 to 8 p.m.--or when it's out of baked goods--to support the city's library. According to 89.3 WFPL, "floodwaters caused at least $1 million in damage to the library main branch" (301 York St.) from the storm on Aug. 4. It remains closed during recovery efforts.
