Cirque Berzerk under the big top at Forecastle Festival 2010 [Music]

My favorite act at Forecastle was surprisingly not a band, it was the circus!

I attended Forecastle Festival this past Saturday at Louisville's Waterfront Park. My husband and I originally went to see CAKE and then we had planned on leaving the park to go back home and feed our dogs and then return for Smashing Pumpkins. However, to our dismay, there was not reentry for people who had one-day passes. Therefore, our plan to get a cheap dinner and chug as much water as possible at home was dead. If we wanted to see Smashing Pumpkins we were forced to stay, spend all our money, and use port-a-johns.

Minus the Bear matched the heat with sultry rock at Forecastle Festival 2010 [Music]

Minus the Bear kicked off the evening's Main Stage shows on the last evening of Forecastle Festival, offering steamy tunes to complement the weather.

Seattle-based indie rock band Minus the Bear got the evening started on the last day of Forecastle Festival on the Main Stage. I wasn't that familiar with the band before this show, but after a few technical issues were cleared up, and I finished getting pictures from the stage, I was able to sit down and listen to a few songs.

She & Him charm the crowd at Forecastle Festival 2010 [Music]

A cool, breezy contrast to the day's heat and psychedelia, She & Him stepped up with retro style and sweet crooning on the Main Stage of Forecastle Festival 2010.

Against Me! crack jokes and have fun at Forecastle Festival finale [Music]

The Flaming Lips weren't the only band closing down Forecastle Festival 2010. Florida punks, Against Me!, made a strong showing on second stage to their enthusiastic fan base.

“Hi. We’re the Flaming Lips…” smirked Against Me!’s Tom Gabel before punching the first power chord of the Florida punk outfit’s energetic second stage Forecastle Festival set Sunday night.

Peace, love, and The Flaming Lips close out Forecastle Festival 2010 [Music]

Forecastle ended with the joyful spectacle of a Flaming Lips show that featured songs of peace and love, grizzlies, balloons, and dancing girls. What more could you want?

Planted amongst the crush of photographers' by the stage and fearing electrocution as my feet tangled among the coiled cables, every now and then Wayne Coyne of The Flaming Lips would pop out to check the mikes and oversee the stage logistics, which is something I usually don't see performers do for themselves. I now see this as part of his loving attention to detail (and no doubt, a healthy interest in his own safety). Wayne Coyne is going to -- by God – make sure you have a good time at a Flaming Lips concert or die trying.

Jukebox the Ghost keeps a sense of humor at Forecastle Festival [Music]

Washington D.C. rock and roll band don't let small Forecastle crowd keep them from covering the '90s and having fun.

Washington D.C. piano rockers Jukebox the Ghost aren’t unfamiliar with the Louisville area. The piano/guitar/drums trio has played the Vernon Club twice since June of last year, and though the crowd was small at their second stage Forecastle Festival time slot (overlapping main stage sets by Minus the Bear and She & Him), those there knew all about the band – and most of their words.

Sunday at Forecastle Festival: The rock t-shirt [Music]

The rock t-shirts were out in full force (without Cult Jam) Sunday afternoon at Forecastle Festival.

The guy with the face paint making his way through the huge crowd Saturday evening was nowhere to be seen Sunday afternoon at Forecastle Festival. Instead, Frisbee throwers, corn hole tossers, and a guy dressed like a banana helped make up the colorful crowd on a sunny and hot July day. And while some beat the heat by going shirtless, there were plenty of others wearing - you guessed it - rock band t-shirts.

Dar Williams showcases her songwriting at Forecastle [Music]

Dar Williams may only have performed eleven songs in her hour set on Sunday at Forecastle Festival 2010, but her stories and conversation gave the already vivid songs even more life.

The two massive disco balls which hung over the stage were so not Dar Williams. In place presumably for Sunday night's Flaming Lips grand finale to Forecastle Festival 2010, they just wouldn't work for Williams. (By the way, 90% of the disco balls in the US are made here in Louisville).

Forecastle Festival gives 1% of profits back to the planet [Music]

Forecastle Festival is the first and only music festival to be a member of 1% For the Planet.

1% For the Planet is a global foundation that exists to build and support an alliance of businesses that are financially committed to creating and healthy planet. It was founded by creator Yvon Chouinard. Forecastle Festival is the first and only music festival to belong to 1% For the Planet.
