Monster Jam: monster trucks with monster budgets return to Louisville for two nights of destruction [Family and Parenting]

The stars of Monster Jam (returning to Louisville January 27,28) cost about $600,000 per year each to build, maintain, transport and staff but entertain more than 4 million fans annually. An interview with one of the drivers reveals interesting background and some monstrous figures and facts.

Advance Auto Parts Monster Jam returns to Freedom Hall on January 27 and 28 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for kids (ages two to twelve) are just $5 while other seats begin at $22. The event will feature Maximum Destruction, Wolverine, Samson, Raminator, Rammunition, Full Boar, Mechanical Mischief and Heavy Hitter, although featured trucks may change without notice.

UofL needs wins to salvage its perception and Pitino's reputation [Sports]

"With a team that’s lost five of seven games, any win gives the fans hope," says UofL fan Nick Coffey, who operates TheCardinalConnect.com. But those wins are getting harder to come by for UofL basketball coach Rick Pitino. The season is in free fall and the fan base is starting to erode.

How far has the Louisville Cardinal basketball “brand” fallen? Consider this headline from the Washington Post: ‘Louisville rebounds from blowout with close loss at Marquette.’ Yes, the national perception of UofL basketball is that losing is considered a “rebound.”  However, the NCAA tournament committee won’t look at moral victories as a reason to hand out an at-large bid to the Cardinals.

NBA Stars in our eyes or the biggest ticket for Louisville sports fans [Sports]

In recent years time and time again city officials have attempted to lure pro-basketball teams to the city, with varying degrees of success.

Ever since the American Basketball Association merged with the NBA and selected the Kentucky Colonels rival, Indiana Pacers, as a new expansion team for the league despite the Colonels being overwhelming favorites due to their dominance in the league since its inception every so often we see a new possible pro basketball team story for the Derby City.

Kentucky travels to Louisville, brings along the Big Blue Nation [Sports]

Miller reaches 1000 points in his career at Kentucky
Kentucky turned Freedom Hall BLUE for the night, and Darius Miller walked away as the newest member of the 1000 point club at Kentucky, now with 58 members.

Many Kentucky fans in Louisville look forward to the annual game in Freedom Hall, sponsored by the University of Kentucky Alumni Association in Louisville.  The meeting between University of Arkansas at Little Rock and Kentucky brought fans out on a chilly evening in Louisville.  Darius Miller was the star of the evening as he joins 57 other Kentucky players to reach 1000 points in their Wildcat careers.

Calipari baiting fans again with threats of breaking tradition [Sports]

Calipari hints the traditional "home" game at Freedom Hall may come to an end if fans don't show. If the school puts a halt to future games there, it can only blame itself.

UK basketball coach John Calipari’s checklist for the week: Beat Lamar into the ground but not be happy about it…check (after the 86-64 win on December 28th, Calipari said he “wasn’t in a great frame of mind”). Next on the list: beat rival Louisville for a third straight time…check. Item #3…let’s see…stir up Big Blue Nation again with some off-the-cuff comments about breaking tradition…check.

Ice Hockey and Louisville: A surprising combination [Sports]

The city of Louisville seems like an odd home to professional hockey but that hasn't stopped plenty from trying.

When one thinks about the sport of hockey the mid-south region of the United States isn’t the first area that comes to mind. However, it’s a combination that’s been tried time and time again in the city of Louisville.

Much to the surprise for the football/basketball obsessed city, the town has had its share of pro-hockey teams.

Professional Lacrosse comes to Louisville [Sports]

Professional Lacrosse is making it's way to Louisville with the Kentucky Stickhorses, a team which will play their inaugural season in 2012.

In recent years the sport of Lacrosse has become more and more so a fixture in local athletics, at the high school and college levels there has been an outpouring of interest in recent seasons.

With that in mind, the upstart professional Lacrosse league, the North American Lacrosse League, has announced the team of the Kentucky Stickhorses, a new team based right here in the Derby City. In fact, according to the league the number of individuals playing Lacrosse has doubled since 2001.

Sports Legends of the Ville (landmark edition): FREEDOM [Sports]

For the past couple of months I've been occasionally throwing out iconic athletes from Louisville. Sports legends of the Ville I called the series. But, I'd like to add to that series, sports legends of a different variety; the iconic buildings and arenas that made the city's historic sports past what it is today.

What better place to start the landmark edition of Sports Legends of the Ville than Freedom Hall? Opened in 1956, Freedom Hall was a building that was beyond it’s time. Ironically though, the building itself didn’t open to house basketball games; as so many remember it today.

It was actually built to house the World’s Championship Horse Show during the Kentucky State Fair. A horse show still operates in that building annually, almost a tribute to the venue.

What those plaques at Freedom Hall are about[Sports]

For years now I haven't thought much about those plaques that sit around the fair and expo center. However, I recently discovered these plaques represent more than pictures of great Kentucky sports figures.

For about thirty years the hall has been a way to support Kosair as well as the men and women that display sportsmanship in athletic endeavors.
