Star Wars, baseball, and strawberries [Family and parenting]

Star Wars art, happy hour at the Bats, and a festival devoted to strawberries. Bring on this well-deserved Memorial Day weekend.

I don't know about you, but every day this week seemed like ten. I've earned this weekend--and I'll be damned if I spend it catching up on housework. If you've had a week like this, check out a few of the events below. Each event is a great way to make this Memorial Day a well-deserved success with both parents and children finally, deep sigh, happy.

Tonight's Slugger Field happy hour features $1 beers [Downtown]

Plus, the best place to watch the Bats as they wrap up their series against the Toledo Mud hens. Hint: It's not an actual seat.

Several Thursdays each baseball season — including tonight against the Toledo Mud Hens — Louisville Slugger Field (401 E. Main St.) runs a happy hour before the first pitch, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Regulars call it "Thirsty Thursdays," and that's a pretty good nickname because Budweiser beers at the Overlook Deck above right-center field are only $1. Yes, that's awesome. And yes, the line practically snakes from the outfield to home plate. Suggestion: Buy more than one brew at a time.

You too can afford a drink and a bite at the Brown

Five buck wine and tasty tapas for the rest of us at the Brown Hotel lobby bar
It's gratifying knowing that major publications expound on the pleasures of dining at the English Grill; nice knowing that our city has such a noteworthy restaurant. I've never supped myself in the "rarified confines of ... one of the finest restaurants in the nation" (according to Forbes Traveller).

In search of cheap sushi

Investigating super happy hour at Maido
I have a few addictions in life, some cheap (York patties) and some not (international travel). And then there are those in between that can keep me from my travels — namely sushi. I could eat it every day for the rest of my life.

Keeping the stimulus money home: Oasis Sushi Bar

Each week Dana McMahan will spend her payroll stimulus at a local business. This week, half price sushi on Preston.
When my husband and I traded our rental in the Highlands for home ownership in the ‘217 we knew what we were giving up – among other pleasures, the ability to walk to a sushi dinner. So I was giddy when the sign went up late last fall on Preston Highway announcing a sushi restaurant opening soon. Sushi on Preston! The dreary no-man’s land of day-labor, fast food and dry cleaners south of Eastern Parkway would finally offer more than a quick route to the airport.

Happy Tail Hour

The pet social event of the fall is here! Grab your furry friend (and a leash) on Thursday, September 4th and head down to the river for Happy Tail Hour!
Louisville Metro Animal Services invites you and your four-legged buddies down to the riverfront at the Brown-Forman Amphitheater (next to Tumbleweed) for a furry good time on September 4th from 5 until 8:30 pm. During this free pet-friendly event, guests and their pets can mingle and meet other owners and animals while enjoying a happy hour atmosphere! There will be booths with pet-related information, supplies and gifts, upscale food and beverages along with cocktails and BBC beer. Live music will also be a part of this waterfront celebration.
