62°F7:25 AM It was debauchery in plain sight Monday, April 30th at the KFC Yum! Center. Using mattresses as a disguise, Forty-five teams raced their straight-from-the-chop-shop dragsters for the coveted trophies for fastest times (regardless of speed limits), entertainment (distraction), and decoration (disguise).
In 1959 seventeen women formed "The Fillies Club" to aid the Derby Festival in producing a gala Derby Ball. The Fillies currently have a limited membership of 250 ladies that work harder than ever in supporting the Kentucky Derby Festival. This year they did not disappoint with a beautifully styled and uniquely illuminated event space. The patrons brought their sense of fashion out for the event filled with cocktails, dinner, dancing, and of course the coronation!
You can rail against the Kentucky Derby until your face is bluer than bluegrass – call it decadent, depraved, or possibly even overrated – but there’s no denying: the enormity of this event is impossible to escape. The race itself has hardly changed at all through the years, barring a widening of the playing field, but the fanfare surrounding it has expanded rapidly even over the last two decades.
Rated as one of the top 100 events in North America, the Derby Festival's Opening Ceremonies is truly a sight to behold. Whether you're new to Thunder Over Louisville or a return visitor, the show never seems to grow old.
The day-long event kicks off the two exciting weeks of events that are part of the annual Kentucky Derby Festival. The Thunder Air Show dazzles the crowd with more than 100 planes, aerobatics teams, daring sky diving teams and breathtaking stunts.

If you're one of those holiday shoppers who waits until the day after Christmas to buy your commemorative ornaments then you're going to love the Derby Festival's yard sale. Instead of trolling ebay, you can get official Derby pins from 1973 through last year plus assorted t-shirts, glasses, posters, and, of course, ornaments (cut down from $50 to $20). It's only been six weeks, but if you're already missing Derby, this is a good way to keep in the spirit at a fraction of the cost.
If you’re so hungry you could eat a horse, step away from Churchill Downs—way away—and instead head to the Festival Plaza at Waterfront Park for all the carnival food you can handle, all the music you can dance to and all the cold beer you can drink (and keep down). The fabled Kentucky Derby Festival Chow Wagon opens today and is open daily until 11 p.m. until Derby Eve.
