After losing a reported $5 million on the inaugural HullabaLOU, Churchill Downs Inc. cancelled next year's festival and put down its entertainment division today. In a press release, CDI blamed the festival's poor showing on hot weather and a cold economy.

All day long I talked to die hard fans who couldn't wait for a chance to see him perform live. There were countless people in cowboy boots and straw hats. I talked to fans who came from New Jersey to Michigan, some of whom have saw him 10 times or more and keep coming back.
While a lot of people came for acts such as Ben Folds, Huey Lewis and the News, or Loretta Lynn, the headliners really dictated the atmosphere each night at HullabaLOU.
Friday was a wasteland until after work. Soccer moms started showing up around 7 pm, once the kids were safely at the sitter's for a night. People of all ages wore nostalgia band t-shirts. While there were certainly 20somethings around to see Bon Jovi, the overall crowd skewed closer to 40+.
Full disclosure - I'm not a die hard Jason Aldean fan. I heard so much about his music from so many people, though, that I was really looking forward to seeing him in action. The tailgaters who kept giving me free drinks and leis wouldn't lie to me, right?

First there was Forecastle; now there’s HullabaLOU, a brand-new music festival to be held at Churchill Downs this weekend, July 23–25. With musical acts ranging from Al Green to Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes to the B-52s to Bon Jovi and the Dave Matthews Band, there truly is something for everybody.
