How Churchill Downs Entertainment could have made HullabaLOU work [Music]

Someone who's never planned an event larger than a cocktail party gives advice on how to host a music festival that makes a profit (or at least loses less than $5 million)

After losing a reported $5 million on the inaugural HullabaLOU, Churchill Downs Inc. cancelled next year's festival and put down its entertainment division today. In a press release, CDI blamed the festival's poor showing on hot weather and a cold economy.

HullabaLOU Photo Roundup: Kenny Chesney Fans [Music]

Straw coyboy hats and cowboy boots were the outfit of choice at HullabaLOU on Saturday. For those of you who think we're showing off too much lovely lady flesh check out our equal opportunity photo gallery of sexy shirtless men.

Kenny Chesney's fan seduce a rock and roll girl with their tailgating country ways at HullabaLOU [Music]

One woman's tale of the most wholesome afternoon she's ever spent drunk. I wasn't a Kenny Chesney fan before HullabaLOU, but the next time he's here in Louisville I'm buying tickets just so I can hang out with the tailgaters.

Kenny Chesney didn't have a tractor on stage, but all the ladies still thought he was sexy at HullabaLOU [Music]

A rock and roll girl is won over by Kenny Chesney's infectuously enthusiastic fans and foot tapping music.

There's a reason Kenny Chesney was Saturday night's HullabaLOU headliner. This man knows how to rule a stage.

All day long I talked to die hard fans who couldn't wait for a chance to see him perform live. There were countless people in cowboy boots and straw hats. I talked to fans who came from New Jersey to Michigan, some of whom have saw him 10 times or more and keep coming back.

Who came to HullabaLOU? [Music]

While a lot of people came for acts such as Ben Folds, Huey Lewis and the News, or Loretta Lynn, the headliners really dictated the atmosphere each night at HullabaLOU.

Friday was a wasteland until after work. Soccer moms started showing up around 7 pm, once the kids were safely at the sitter's for a night. People of all ages wore nostalgia band t-shirts. While there were certainly 20somethings around to see Bon Jovi, the overall crowd skewed closer to 40+.

Tales from the UPS Shuttlebus to HullabaLOU [Music]

The shuttle ride from the Ford/UPS free parking out to Churchill Downs is an education in interesting fans.

One mom showed off a photo on her iPhone of the oversized Kenny Chesney painting she keeps in her living room so she can wake up every morning and have coffee with him.

A man traded yesterday's Al Green tickets for an electrical breaker and a celing fan.

Jason Aldean underwhelms at HullabaLOU [Music]

It's hard to like a musician who looks bored to be here.

Full disclosure - I'm not a die hard Jason Aldean fan. I heard so much about his music from so many people, though, that I was really looking forward to seeing him in action. The tailgaters who kept giving me free drinks and leis wouldn't lie to me, right?

He played at the same time as Huey Lewis and the News and the Right Reverend Al Green. From my vantage, I could spy all three of them, and I have to say Jason brought the least energy to the stage. Huey Lewis

What to do when heading to HullabaLOU [Music]

Woodstock was “three days of peace and music.” Forecastle was “three days of music, art and activism.” Now there’s HullabaLOU, which is three days of everything else—and something you can take your Mom and Dad to, too.

Who would’ve thought Louisville would turn out to be a music festival Mecca? First there was Forecastle; now there’s HullabaLOU, a brand-new music festival to be held at Churchill Downs this weekend, July 23–25. With musical acts ranging from Al Green to Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes to the B-52s to Bon Jovi and the Dave Matthews Band, there truly is something for everybody.
