62°F7:25 AM Yesterday, I took a look at the most winningest jockeys in the history of the Kentucky Derby. However in truth, that’s only part of the story in regards to the people involved in a horse winning the run for the roses. One can’t ignore the incredible importance and stress placed on the horse’s trainer. With that in mind, I thought I’d take some time to honor those individuals as I did with the jockeys previously.
Still coming off the excitement of longshot horse, I’ll Have Another taking home the Derby crown this year I noted that in NBC’s national broadcast of the event they spoke to several of the jockeys in this year’s race that have won the penultimate horse race several times. While a horse only has one chance to win the Derby there’s no restrictions placed on jockeys, because of that a minority of jockeys have become legends in the city of Louisville.
The Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame inductees have been announced and will be honored in the annual ceremony June 7th at the Grand Ballroom at Louisville’s Crowne Plaza Hotel. The event is opened to the public and tickets run $ 75.00, the revenue generated from the event will be donated to Kosair charities.
When I read that Kentucky’s rates for brain injury is more than twice the national average, it didn’t seem right. Wouldn’t something so widespread garner a lot of attention? I can’t remember the last time someone warned me about brain injury, yet it is twice as common as HIV, breast cancer, spinal cord injury and multiple sclerosis combined.
There I was standing in a line roughly as long as the state of Rhode Island with a basketball in hand.
Fred Cowgill is WLKY-32’s sports director and he has been covering Louisville sports for 26 years. He’s witnessed 25 Kentucky Derbys, eight Breeders Cups, two PGA Championships and 13 Final Fours, including the most recent one, in New Orleans. So how did he rate that UofL–UK basketball game?
Louisville native Joey Wagner, owner of J Wagner Group, along with Deuce Brand would travel to the famous (or infamous depending on what you've heard) Bourbon Street to host a Final Four party for the loyal fans of the Louisville Cardinals and Kentucky Wildcats that followed their team to New Orleans. The Battle of the Bluegrass Final Four Bash took place at 10 pm the night prior to Saturday's Final Four game between the in-state rivals at the club 711 Bourbon Heat, located in the Heart of the French Quarter on Bourbon Street.
Not to say that Indiana University basketball fans are the only ones in the area who like Daughtry, but if your blood runs Cardinal red or Wildcat Blue, we’ve got a good feeling about what you’ll be doing on Saturday evening. However, for everyone else, multi-platinum band Daughtry will be performing at Louisville Palace at 7:30 Saturday night.
Two economic data points updated yesterday by the Federal Reserve show that daffodils aren't the only things blooming in Kentucky. As of the fourth quarter of 2011, Kentucky per capita income finally reached pre-recession levels, and the Federal Reserve's leading index forecasts Kentucky economic activity at levels not seen in the better part of a generation.
