Meet your farmers at The Root Cellar this weekend [Food & Dining]

Come by the Root Cellar this weekend to talk to local food producers and even meet some live poultry.

About six months ago, The Root Cellar opened on the corner of Third and Hill Streets in Old Louisville. Since then, Ron Smith, who owns the small shop, has provided the residents of the neighborhood with the freshest possible eggs, milk, meat, and produce. All foods sold at The Root Cellar come from farms in the surrounding area, providing a cozy, friendly place to easily buy and eat local.

Lecture, panel discussion to examine origins and options for buying local

The locavore movement has taken off in a big way, with locally grown food and, often, small and/or organic farm origins holding great appeal for those interested in lowering their carbon footprint and avoiding many of the chemicals added to mass-produced produce and meat. Visit any local farmers’ market and you’ll find flavorful chicken, lamb, bison, pork and more—all coming from surrounding counties.

Farmers Market Find: Summer Squash [Southern Indiana]

Read the tale of this brave writer, as she hunts the aisles of her local farmer's market, collects her bounty of produce, then ingeniously figures out how to cook it all.

That object you see pictured above is a summer squash. Of some kind. That's what the nice lady at the New Albany Farmers Market told me, anyway (I trust her).
